Lynn, Stoped by race headquarters twice and saw your plane sitting there. You weren't around. The woman at the desk was talking to someone about the race results. She said, "The one I like is the Kitfox". Congradulations how about a short synopisis of your race. Red Hamilton won his class with the tube and fabric Tailwind with an average speed of 223 mph.

Thanks, guys....
It was kind of a hollow "victory" as no one else entered the LSA
class. I guess when they heard that the (in)famous Lynn was entered,
flying a Kitfox with Jabiru power, they all figured it was a waste of
time trying to beat me.....at least that's the way I'll remember it. : )
The race itself was fun. The race officials let me start about two
hours early, because I told them I was going to be flying lean of
peak EGT, and that meant slow speeds...slower even than LSA's would
normally be. (I think they used an hour glass to time me) So while
others were still wiping the dew from their planes, I was taking off,
and the timers started my race time. It was pretty quiet on the
frequency until about 2-1/2 hours later when a chase plane called to
ask how I was doing. After that, a little bit of chatter between
planes, but for the most part, the frequency was quiet. Once in a
while someone would ask at what latitude someone was flying, but the
answer was often suspect, because I had heard that the racers often
lie to each other about what altitude they were flying just to lure
the other guy into a worse flying condition just to better their own
chances of winning the race.
I had discovered that I couldn't set my GPS to indicate the lat-longs
of just where the race ended, so I set it to a road intersection near
there. Then when I got near that intersection, I "quit navigating",
and set myself up at the correct latitude according to the GPS, and
continued to fly east until the proper longitude was coming up, then
I spotted the airfield with its' orange balls indicating the finish
line, and pushed in the mixture to full, the throttle to full and
poured on the coal. I probably crossed the finish line at 120 mph or
so. That was strictly for show, as the race is a timed race, and that
last little burst wouldn't have meant anything in the grand scheme of
things. Then I headed to Fond Du Lac for what was to be a gathering
of racers on the ground and, later , a flight of 50-some planes into
Oshkosh. That didn't happen, and we were told at the award
presentation (that night) that we would all fly into Oshkosh (on our
own) when they opened the field on Monday, which we did. When I
returned to Fond Du Lac that evening, I was too pooped to set up my
tent near my plane, so I just sat in the plane and slept (?)
overnight. If anybody has tried that in a model IV, stuffed with
camping gear in the co-pilot's seat, it ain't a pretty experience.
Yeah, Pat, I had the plane tied down at the race parking area, for
Mon and Tues, then moved it over to the Rotec display so I could show
off the TBI installation, and later moved it to HBC where I spent the
night, then got out of Oshkosh Thursday morning about 10 am...sorry I
missed you. I never got to see or meet Red....I just couldn't find
him or the plane!
It was a lot of fun, and I suspect that there'll be LOTS of racers in
this class next year. One guy I spoke with said that he tried to talk
some of his RV-12 friends into racing, but they heard about the speed
of the Kitfox with the Jabiru, and decided not to bother. : )
I think I will retire from racing while I'm the current LSA
Champion....."Retired undefeated" has a pretty good ring to it, eh?

Ever notice how just flip-flopping two letters in a word makes it a
very different word? I intended to say "altitude" and it came out
"latitude".....but most people would figure that out.

I'll do anything to get a "free" trophy, apparently. : )
Speaking of doing anything, it took me 873 miles of travel over two
days to cover the 703-mile trip out there, due to the storms I
encountered. I guess maybe I ought to expand on the "short synopsis"
of the race that Pat asked me to write....there were some Kitfox-
related mini-stories involved....

Hello Lynn
Great write up on your adventures. Please do let us in on --- "there were
some Kitfox related mini-stories involved--""
It's great to see that there are still people who will tough it out just for
the fun of it. The trip that you just completed is the type of experience
that is most memorable and a lot of us would like to do ourselves
Thanks again

Thanks, Ted.....now that I've wound down from the hectic last two
weeks, I do think I'll write down some of the interesting things that
happened prior to, and during the race and the aftermath....that'll
be a lot more fun than trying to get my house and yard back into "pre-
race" shape. : )

Lynn,
Great story, even with as you say a "hollow victory" I'm sure you still had
a great time, I know I would have, makes me wish I had my Outback up and
flying, would have loved to joined the race. A friend and I found ourselves
tied down in Shawano Wisconsin one year waiting out a storm on our way into
Oshkosh, fortunately the FBO there had a nice set of couches for us to wait
out the storm on.
I made it to Oshkosh this year on Friday. My wife and I stopped by the
Kitfox Booth and bumped into John, tried to lure some secrets from him on
the finish and fit of his strut fairings, he wasn't saying much, seemed
pretty busy, Debra was also busy with customers so we moved on. Tried to
find the Kitfox's by checking with the folks at the Homebuilt Headquarters,
normally they know the rows they are parked in but unfortunately this year
with all the rain they had to put them wherever they had a dry spot and had
no clue where to find them. Finally found 2 at the ultra lite field, a 4 and
a 3 but no one was around, so we watched the air show, checked out the
Seaplane Base and headed for home. Well, maybe next year.

Lloyd-
I was parked next to a model 5 in row 307, and Stan Sprecht and
another 'fox were 2-3 rows behind me, and Pete Christenson was a row
in front of me. This was the area where most all of the Kitfoxes camp
every year. Then there was Rex Phelps and another 'fox from Michigan
(can't recall his name) in their usual spot right next to the
Homebuilders Headquarters, and of course the absolutely gorgeous new
Rotec-radial-powered Super Sport flown to the show by Debra and John,
and two others as I recall. I'm sure I missed a few. Oh, yeah, and a
Kitfox on floats near the Kitfox display.

Thanks Lynn,
With that many around I'm not sure how I missed them, were they all still
there on Friday? I did see the 3 at the Kitfox Booth including the Radial,
and you are correct, it was an absolutely gorgeous bird as were the others
on display there by John and Debra.

Sorry I missed you Lloyd. Mine was the yellow IV (with peeling flapperons) at the UL field. I was thinking of putting my cell # on the prop tag, I probably should have...
Though it can be a challenge to land on, I would encourage more of our fraternity to fly in to the UL field. There is lots of fun to be had down there and easy access. Plus you can go flying during the week...
