I have noticed on the list from time to time that some people are using Odyssey batteries in their K/F. Can anyone tell me what model they have, and does it fit the M4 battery box? also is the higher charge rate a problem? Thanks, Don

Hello Don,
When I changed my ageing 582 for a Jabiru 2200, one year ago, I was
told that I needed a stronger battery and I was recommended the Odyssey
PC 680. It wouldn't fit the battery box on the firewall of my model 3
but I found a smart place for it, right behind the seats. I also need
to slightly move my CG because the Jabiru (with oil cooler, heatbox,
etc) was slightly heavier than the 582. It did the trick!
I am very pleased with the battery. I spins my engine to the required
300 RPM even at sub-zero OAT. Note that since it is a dry cell battery,
you can install in in any way you want. A battery box is not necessary
as it will never leak.
Cheers,
Michel

You might try Powersonic (#12180NB) for $31 -has
served me well for 3 years.

Don,
I am having great luck with an Odessy PC 625 on my 912S. I think the
coldest that I have started it was about 15 F. Works reall well. I got the
recommendations from this list.
Like Michel says, it doesn't need a box and can be mounted in any position.
I just strapped it to the firewall with some SS straps.

I use the 535 in the stock M4 battery box but I had to cut down the plastic fins sticking out of the side of the battery to make it fit. When I asked around about the wisdom of cuttin the fins down I got different responses. The guy at the battery store believes that the fins are for cooling because the typical installation (right next to a hot motorcycle motor) is very hot and has very little air space. If I were to do it again, I'd go with the 625 and ditch the stock box.

Randy,
Is your battery mounted inside or outside the firewall? Anyone else have
input on the pros and cons of which side the firewall to mount it? Install
on a Model 5 with 912.

Most definitely mount behind the firewall. Heat and batteries are a most
potent combo.

Lloyd, Mine is a IV, but I have it cabin side of the firewall with the
Master Solenoid on the battery mount and the ground wire through the
firewall to the engine case. Braid then connects that connection to the
mount bolt on that side and through the bolt to the ground buss. The pos
side also goes direct from the master solenoid to the starter and the + from
that side to the circuit breaker buss.
In the IV, there is definitely no room on the engine side for a battery. At
least in my IV there is not.

Lloyd,
Mine is on engine side of firewall. I do have a Series 5 but with a Series 7
firewall forward. This moves the 912S forward about 4 inches which improves
cg with the light engine and gives more room for the battery.
One pro is short power runs with heavy wire. I guess I am blind to any
cons.... I am not worried about heat. The battery in my car and truck are
on that side of the firewall. I think that there is more air moving through
my cowl than through my engine compartments to keep temps down. In fact I
have a spare thermocouple on my eis there to monitor intake air temp. It
usually runs about 85 - 95 F. (I think. I will try to pay more attention
to it.) I just thought since I had it I would monitor as info relevant to
carb ice.

Just to throw another log in the fire (no pun intended), I mounted my
Odyssey Homebuilders 680 (Aircraft Spruce p/n 11-02233) battery on the
firewall side, lower right side of aircraft, but I have Jabiru 2200
power. Even with my recent lost exhaust/tail pipe, and flames licking
the firewall 4" off center toward the battery, I had no battery
problems. A scorched fire sleeve, burned paint on the engine mount, and
a slightly warped airbox (fiberglas), the battery, secure in it's
(Aircraft Spruce p/n 11-01853) mounting box, suffered no damage...just
some soot on the box. Did I get all the sponsors in? Sorry...I've been
watching too much Nascar. : )
