Hi all,
Could anyone suggest a source for the M8x1x6 bolt that is used to plug up the EHT port on the Rotax 914. I couldn't find them on McMaster-Carrs and my Google searches are coming up blank

Paul,
Have you considered just to get the 20 mm version and cut it down to 6mm? The thread on the 20mm should go up to the shoulder of the head and the application is uncritical anyway.

Michael,
Just a question. Are you sure that the thread of the EGT ports in the 914 exhaust is M8..?
I have a recollection that mine are an AN thread.
I may be wrong.
Regards,
Dave

Hi Alll,
I neglected to mention that I was looking for stainless steel bolts. My concern is that if I used steel bolts that they would seize and be impossible to remove.
Interestingly enough the bolt is listed in the parts catalog but without a part number.. go figure

Hi PaulAre you trying to obtain stainless because your studs did in fact sieze? Be careful studs can take heat and be strong enough, you may want to check with Lockwood? Have a look here:http://www.totallystainless.com/Ron Parigoris [quote][b]

Dave,
Might be close but not quite right.
an AN5 bolt has a diameter of 5/16th inch = 7.93mm and 24 tracks per inch = 1.058mm pitch. The smaller diameter and the little difference in pitch will allow an AN5 bolt to go into an M8 with the fine threaded pitch of 1mm without problems for a small number of turns before it gets to snug.
However, the manual calls for M8 * 6mm with fine threaded pitch of 1 mm

Michael and all,
|
I did not follow this thread too closely, but for what it's worth an M8
bolt diameter is 8 mm, and the pitch is 1.25 mm.
Best regards,

I have fitted EGT-sensors on my 914, but I still have the original plug
bolts.
I can't think of a reason why I would take out the EGT-sensors again, so
I have no problem giving you the original bolts. Do you need all four of
them?
Send me your address, and I will drop them in the mail.

Gilles,
Have a look at the DIN standards DIN960 and DIN961. (OK, there are likely
replaced by ISO or IEC Standards but I have no reference numbers for them in
the moment)
You are correct that a regular M8 would have a pitch of 1.25mm. However, you
can get them also with a pitch of 1mm. I highlighted it by using the common
phrase "fine threaded ". Fine threaded metric bolts are available from M8
upwards.
This "fine threaded " Metric bolts are not very common and this is why Paul
has such a hard time finding them. I do not have access to the DIN960/961
and have my (German) mechanical reference book at work but I believe an M8
bolt with only 6mm length regardless of the pitch is none standard because
in my opinion it makes mechanically little sense to have a bolt shorter in
length then its diameter because the standard purpose of a bolt is being a
fastener and not a plug for a hole. Also I have not found "fine threaded "
M8 bolts in Stainless Steel.
