Has anyone come across this ignition problem before ? :

In my usual runup I noticed that the engine is vibrating like mad on one (L) magneto and there seemed to be some backfiring going on.
The engine runs fine on R and on BOTH.
For example at 2450 on BOTH, I get 2370 for R and 2150 on L.
What am I looking for ?
Karl

Karl,
Most probable is a fouled plug.

Bud

Bud,

That would be easy to fix. But why is it showing only on one magneto ?

Karl when you switch to one magneto, and one plug is bad, the engine is running on 3 cylinders.

Hi Karl,

I assume that you have checked for a loose plug cap. They will come off.
I am just replacing my bottom caps which seem to be more susceptible to
working loose. The caps are obtainable at http://www.clubplug.net/ for
$6.30 each. The NGK 5 K ohm resistor cap part no. is VD05FMH.
(Lockwood's price is $53.34!!)

Another possible cause is a broken wire at the multi-pin connectors on
the ignition modules. On early engines, there was a common problem with
breaks inside the small inlet grommets due to a tight bend and vibration.

Cheers, John

Hi John, Bud, Pete,

Thank you for all the hints. I am going this afternoon to check all that out. On my way I am also picking up a set of spark plugs. If I don't need them now,
then I will need them in the future.
I assume it will be something simple.
Cheers,
Karl
