While attending a CFI refresher course, the instructor reminded everyone that EFIS DB updates must go in a maintenance log; primarily referring to certified aircraft and Garmin 430/480/530 etc... Anyone complying for experimentals and in what fashion? for which devices?

The discussion gets complicated by whether you are using the EFIS for
IFR or not. For IFR, the issue of certified vs experimental goes away.
Even in a certified plane there is no requirement for "maintenance
logs". The requirements are for "records". I'd suggest for your own
sanity that database updates and VOR checks be in a small spiral
notebook, not in an airframe logbook.
