Hi Guys: I am a new purchaser of a Lightning kit position and have a couple of questions from the group.
1. What avionics is preferred? The GRT or Dynon or other.
2. Do you recommend purchasing the II or III avionics package?
3. What options should I purchase? 30 gal for sure, wheel pants?, Wing Tips?, Interior?
4. Any preference as to which “build” center to use. I live in Connecticut and have visited Greenlandings. Everyone there very friendly and ready to help as was Ryan Gross.
5. How long really does it take to get the plane flying using a builders assistance program?
Just some thoughts off the top. I am a Glasair III builder so am somewhat familiar with the process but not familiar with the flat panel screens etc. I had the steam gauges and Garmin 530W with Garmin intercom Century 2000 A/P.
Thanks for all the input. I see this is a active owners group. I look forward to participating.
Harry

I'll give your questions a try. My Lightning is one of the first, and is Light Sport. I built with the factory assist at Shelbyville. I have a GRT Horizon I.
You may have guessed from the conversation here that we are a close group, I count all of the builders and build centers as friends, almost family. So won't recommend any one center over another, they are all turning out great airplanes.
GRT vs Dynon. Since I have GRT I'll speak to that one. Their factory support is top notch and the equipment is loaded with great features. I'll defer to others on Dynon.
You ask how long to build. My kit arrived in April, had it's FAA inspection in August and, after the required fly off, was in my hanger here in Atlanta in October. Times will vary, but I don't know of any other kit that is as fast, and our completion % is very high. Arion can supply the latest stats, but well over half the kits sold are already flying.

Hi Harry,
My 2c on the questions:
1. Matter of personal preference and plane's mission. Our Florida demo has the twin 10" Skyview in it, one of the customers at Shelbyville recently completed one with a similar 2x10" setup. I love them this way, but I'm a Dynon dealer, so I probably should.
2. thought those were for the S-LSA, and as an experimental builder you have more flex to that
3. Wheel pants - yes, wing tips - I'd say yes, unless roll rate is of utmost importance. Interior - vynil from Shelbyville is great, but I know there's another interior guy in GL.
4. We're all awesome. Or so I've been told
Best of luck!
Max

Hi Harry and welcome to the Lightning Family!!!
My kit was number 74 and I opted to do the builder assist kit in Shelbyville, TN. Mine is an experimental Amateur built. The builder assist program is exceptional. SInce this was my first build, I wanted to have immediate answers when I started to work on something. Also, using the factory tools and jigs was certainly timesaving. I also didn't know what I'd do with all the "leftover stuff" once I finished the project. The educational benefit is also a plus doing the factory assist. I started the project during the first week of Sept and the "jet" flew the first week of November!
I've flown both the Dynon and GRT. While I like both of them my preference is the GRT. Factory support is superb. As far as the avionics package, that will depend on what you really want to do with you plane. I wanted to have an excpptional day/night VFR and added additional bells and whistles. (autopilot, GPS,xm wx, TAS, 406 ELT, cabin night lights, to name a few)
I did opt for the extended winglets and am happy with them. The aircraft is very stable in flight and turns on a dime without fightin to maintain altitude. It also seems gives me slower approach speeds and smoother landings. I also got the 30 gal tanks.
Hope this helps a little.
