Hi,

I found myself stranded with an engine that would not start. There was only a click from the relay, but no movement up front. I got the aircraft home on my trailer, it was to be my last flight this season anyway.
I assume it is a broken sprag clutch. Has anyone got experience in that area ? My question is: does it require removal of the engine ?
I removed the starter motor and it checks out okay. Hand turning the prop is also no problem.
Appreciate any advice.
Karl

Karl,

Sounds like you might have a flat or faulty battery to me. Have you tested the battery under load?

Regards

Hi! Karl
It sounds like a starter solenoid not passing current to the starter. Automotive /agricultural solenoids could be parted out and the contact washer rotated to remake contact.
Otherwise probably the ground circuit to the engine is inadequate or even not passing electricity.
Certainly not the sprag clutch the other end of the engine !
Assuming you have taken Kingsley’s advice.?

Bob Harrison G-PTAG

Karl,

If the battery checks out (and no loose connections), then check the output of the clicking solenoid to verify it is supplying power to the starter. The contacts may have moved apart due to melted plastic, or they could be corroded, etc. There should be voltage to the starter, when the solenoid is clicked on.

Regards,
Greg Fuchs

Thanks for all replies. I was hoping for a simple explanation but:I tried using a booster battery from the airport and bypassed the solenoid with a jumper cable. The engine was turning over fine just seconds before this. Cable connections to the engine case and motor were tight. So I'm puzzled by all this.
