Nick, or anyone I have noticed that on approach and I start to drop some flap, that I cant get a full 30 degrees till I am down to about 70 mph. This has been getting worse the last few months. I get a full 40 with the plane on the ground. I suspect the motor getting tired. Any comments welcome. Tex

Tex,
I've experienced the same thing and spoke to Nick about it. He thought it might be the motor not being strong enough.

Thanks Bear, for the reply and have you noticed it getting worse? I really dont feel its a real problem if it stays where its at. I dont often want more till I get down to that speed. Tex

No Tex, not getting worse but it has change my approach speeds. I will probably change it out for a stronger motor.

Experienced pilots use flaps to supplement lift after the pilot has slowed down the aircraft.. Inexperienced pilots use flaps to slow down. Think out in front of the aircraft. Only allow the aircraft to fly you to somewhere your mind has been about 5 minutes ago. KJK ATP/A&P/AI/CFII B-737.757,767, DC-8,9,10. 20,000+ hrs. I will bet you have been exceeding the flap limit speeds on more than one ocassion.

My new word for the day is "insultformation"

It's a means for delivering some useful information in a somewhat insulting manner. Now that I have it as part of my vocabulary, I'll be using it often.

Kent,
Your signature is really impressive. Do you enjoy being condescending?
Maybe I missed a post, but I don't see where Tex was using flaps to "slow down".
Why would you bet that he has been exceeding the limitations of the airplane? I'd be more inclined to bet that he built it and would not exceed the limitations and then seek advice here in this manner.
It could be a motor getting weak, a rigging issue or a wear / lubrication issue.

Hi Steve, I have found that I can live with it till the next annual and I have the spare motor which was used on the trim, till I added the electric trim tab on the elevator.
I am sorry to have started such a controversial thing on the net, but its the right place to air the situations involving flying and the Lightning.
Ken's comments were valid in practice, I don't believe he is familiar with the Lightning and its spec.'s. The proper procedure is to have the plane in landing configuration prior to turning final on approach. The glide rate of 17 to 1 is a little tough to slow down when dropping into a 1200 foot strip with 50 ft trees on both ends, and situated in valley in the mountains. The 40 degree flap position sure helps.

P.S. On the G5 we deploy flaps 10* at 240mph, 20* at 220 mph and 30* at 180 mph.

Hi Tex,

Hey, I like those flap speeds!

On the flap motor issue; I forget just what your panel setup is but I wonder how accurate your airspeed is. I have a flat screen and a steam driven ASI and I have found that there is a variable difference between the two of up to 8 - 10 kt. I haven't finished the testing of all this but my opinion ATM is that the steam driven ASI is good and the errors are in the flat panel and are related to altitude and / or temperature.

Be that as it may, if I look at the flat panel ASI which is say 8 kt slow, then I can't get full flap if my ASI is anyway near the max flap speed. Thus it seems that the flap motor is marginal and won't extend full flap above max flap speed. Now this is not necessarily a bad thing but it is probably an unintentional feature.

I'd be interested to know if you are confident of your ASI indications.

Cheers, Selwyn

Selwyn, I had errors in my system till I modified the pitot tube which is
also the static port. I added another set of holes for the static line. On
the supplied assembly there is one hole. I added another the same size to
the other side. I then placed a set of holes (1/8") about 1 inch back of
these holes. I found that corrected my air speed indications very accurate
and have checked them at all speeds. I use a steam gauge for airspeed and
also found it improved the auto pilot response on altitude.

Hi Tex,

I'd agree that the supplied pitot / static probe will not give good results in any but ideal conditions and your fix seems a good one. What is exercising my mind more at the moment is the variable difference between the two ASI indicators which share the same pitot / static system. Sorting out things like that helps to keep us off the street I suppose. Very Happy

HI Selwyn, the first thing to do would be to determine which is right. Then
play with the static port. Use you GPS and fly the four points on the
compass and compare. It took me about 4 months to finally get it right.
