1. I don't see any reference to the TIME between oil changes, just engine hours. I always thought that acid/other bad stuff builds up in the oil and even without, say 25 or 50 hours on the engine that the oil perhaps should be changed if its been some time since the last change. Your thoughts?

2. Do those of you that have an oil radiator or oil cooler that could retrain oil when the oil tank is emptied also disconnect the radiator/cooler and drain that residual oil, or just leave it there believing its only a small amount?

Hi John,

First two trains of thought. The Rotax maint. manual says 100 hr. oil changes and it has pretty much always been that way in the last several years. In the classes they will tell you 50 hrs. with 91 Oct. and 25 hrs. with 100LL. Don't use a straight dino oil always use a semi synthetic or full synthetic. Full synthetic is only ok with 91 Oct. and semi synthetic with either 91 oct. or 100LL. Never use a full synthetic with 100LL. Always use a motorcycle oil and not a car oil. Car oil does not have the gear additives our engine's & gearbox's need.
I change my oil at 50 hrs. and always have and I use 91 Oct. except for the occasional trip use of 100LL.

This can be a hotly debated issue on oil change due to down time intervals, so I'm sure you may hear some other opinions here and they may be right up to a point.
Oil can become more acidic over time. The dino based oils are far worse than the synthetics. If you fly this winter once every two weeks then I would personally change my oil at least every 120 days. I wouldn't let the oil sit all winter without a start up at least once a month to operating temps. Do people leave oil in all winter, do they run 100 - 200 hrs between oil changes?

Yes, but remember the worst thing that ever happens to a Rotax isssssssss, it's owner.
Do not break apart any other oil lines for the oil change. Do not rotate the prop when the oil is drained or the filter is off. It is not necessary. If you do then you must do an oil purge or risk extremely expensive damage.

Roger,
In a number of your emails on the subject of either engine oil or fuel for
the 912 UL or 912 ULS you state that you only use 91 oct. fuel. I have a
912 UL and I use 93 oct. fuel because I can get it with out ethanol. Here
where I live the 89 and 91 both have ethanol. The 89 is 10% ethanol, and
the 91 is a blend of 89 (with the ethanol) and 93 (without ethanol) which
means the 91 still has ethanol but is lower than 10%. I was wondering why
you refer to the 91 oct. all the time and not 93 oct.?

In CA premium auto gas is 91 octane and I have tested some here for alcohol
at 5-6%. I don't think 93 is available here. While traveling around this
great country ( and Canada on the way to AK) I have found some 91 and some
93; not sure why...

I only say 91 Oct. because that is all we have here in Tucson. We don't have 92 or 93 here. We have ethanol and have had for years. I have used ethanol fuel for all these years in my Rotax engines and have never had an issue. Even though our pumps like many others say up to 10% usually if you test it is is 6%-8%.
The other reason I say 91 Oct. is because that is the lowest grade to use in the 912ULS. It is so no one ever goes lower in their thinking on the right Octane and higher higher of course is just as good or better.
More out of habit, too.
