Fellow Kolbsters...
The time has arrived for me to replace the crank in my thundering 447. I have called the usual suspects looking for a re-built crank... After the guy on the other end of the line stops laughing and wipes the tears from his eyes, I'm informed that there is no such thing as a re-built crank... Verboten by Rotax...
As a new crank is more than $1K I was wondering if anyone knows of source for an illicit re-build??? I picture someone secretly pressing them together in some hidden valley next to his still and pakalolo patch.
Thanks in advance...
Attached are three photos shot yesterday... I borrowed a 152 from the flight school and flew the Lahaina Roads to see if the whales were still here...

Henry, IMHO if someone were to go to the trouble of disassembling the crank, measuring, metallurgical analysis, replacing bearings and reassembling AND do it in a manner that would give you the same service as a new crank AND charge a fair price to cover the cost of being an actual business, I think you'd be paying for a new crank made up of used parts. Consider what would happen if half way through the process one part of your crank is found to be unusable. Where would they get a replacement? Rotax doesn't have any part numbers for any of the crankshaft components except seals. Get a used part? There are no published service limits on these parts. No data to tell the rebuilder what the quality of fits between parts should be. If your crank is not a candidate for a rebuild you're surely not going to find that out for free. Now you have a bill for work performed, a pile of used parts and no crank, still.
Up to you. Too much guess work for me.

About your only choice is to contact a shop that does snowmobile repair and find out who does their machine work. They will be able to split the crank and fit new bearings. But only if you take them the crank and tell them its out of something other than a flying machine. Like say a small air boat or hovercraft.
At least thats my experiance.

The thought I always have about using a used (rebuilt) crank is one taken from one engine which you have no history knowledge of and put in your engine of which you know how it's been run and treated. Maybe it just me, but I don't see how any one can recondition a crank in their typical shop or garage and be as reliable as the original.

If they replace your crank with a new one what happens to the old crank, is it sellable to one of the crank rebuilders? How much could you get for the old core? Next do they play the game with you where they try to claim there is a core charge for the old crank and it has to be sent back or you get change so much more.
What's going rate for a new crank for 447?

Aloha,

Many years ago I had a 503 crank split and replaced the bearings with proper Rotax bearings. That engine was still performing well 800hr later . I lost track of its ownership after that .It ran well and gave no problems.
The crank was split and re assembled by a motor cycle repair work shop that worked on large two stroke motor cycles . The work shop costs were not that bad, the big cost was the rotax bearings . Still worked out about half the cost of replacing the crank with a new one .

<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />
Greetings,
I am coming up on my 300 hour TBO of my Rotax 503 DCDI. I have 24 hours to go. I likewise have wondered about the Rotax requirement of replacing the crank. I have talked with Green Sky Adventures and Air Wolf of CA. Each of them have responded that it is a requirement to replace the crank at 300 hours. I have talked with some Rotax 503 owners who have told me the crank will last a lot longer than the 300 hours suggested by Rotax. Many owner/rebuilders say the crank condition is the key to replacement or continued use. Many variables add to the total picture such as oil used, mixture, moisture conditions during storage etc. My questions are; Is the 300 hour replacement requirement a liability demand or is replacing the crank a safety issue? Should I just replace it and not consider leaving it in the plane?
Also, Thanks Boyd for the help with the toe-in / toe-out problem.
Kurt

Jerb,
If you are uncomfortable with "rebuilt" then stick with new.
It is a known fact that "SOMETIMES" rebuilt, or after market, is actually better than new. I really have no dog in this race either way.
I was merely sharing information. It is strictly a personal choice.
For one person, the most bang for the buck is the decisive issue, and for another person it is the confidence associated with name brand.
Your choice.

Next do they play the game with you where they try to claim there is a core charge for the old crank and it has to be sent back or you get change so much more.
What's going rate for a new crank for 447?

Kurt,It is strictly a risk management decision. It is possible for a crankshaft to fail anytime after it is put into service. Some cranks have failed in only few hours and others have been running flawlessly over 1500 hrs. Typically failure rates increase with time. Rotax is comfortable with the risk levels for their crankshafts up to 300 hrs. for aircraft application of their 503 engines.
What you should do, only you can decide. Keep in mind that risk is UNAVOIDABLE, and it is YOUR risk that you are actually managing, not rotax's risks.

Fellow Kolbsters,
As always this list is the best source of information, thanks.
Called Steve at AIRSCREW PERFORMANCE... Sez he'll do the deed for $788, delivered back to me, 6 months unlimited hr. warranty from start-up. Figures about a week turn around...
Surprising how many "off list" messages I received urging me to consider using the snowmobile crank... All the snowmobile shops here on Maui are so jammed they can't take the time to talk to me, so I'll have to research sources on the net.
I'll keep you guys informed as to what I do & how it turns out.
Kurt, I'm not replacing the crank because it hit 300 hours... I'm replacing because I screwed up the engine bad. Mea Culpa. IMHO TBO = Cover My Ass... Remember that when you read my obit...
