For the collective wisdom
In an effort to align the left wing aileron quick connect (reposition page 27/16 in the manual) I inadvertently ground out about 1/4 ‘’ from the upper glass of the spar – that is to say the spar has a ply core with glass upper and lower parts. I ground away the upper glass part.
Is this a disaster?

Will,
A picture would be worth a thousand words.

Will,
I second Freds request for a photo. But if it is what I am afraid it is - then this is some serious structural damage and you need to involve the company to judge whether repair or raplacement is in order.

Hi Will,
I'd have this conversation with Andy Draper at the LAA if I were you. As I understand it, the fibre glass is just there as a protective layer for the wood spar. I don't believe it takes any load. If so, I'd think that the problem in the photo could be fixed (with an official LAA repair). But... I'm not an inspector. Talk to Andy. Did you cut into the surface of the wood?
Regards,
Philp

Hello Will,
Your wing is like an I beam, a steel girder. The premise is not dissimilar to the way sandwich composite construction works, by having a core material separating two composite sections that oppose each other, one in compression and the other in tension. The factory will be the ones to help you. Good luck sorting it.

William
Tony R has explained the build of the spar well; but (from the photo I saw) your hole is away from the edge where the most stress hits. So the amount of strength lost may be a lot less than you first imagine.
Before you do any more I would take your photo again with a ruler set up showing the edge at zero on the rule. This will enable the distance of the edge of the spar to the hole to be read off from the rule. Then pose the question to the factory……………………
