Where can I get some guidance and possibly some dimensions for trimming the the Zenith supplied canopy for my 601XL? The builders guide says that the canopy is supplied with the ends properly trimmed but if that is true I have built my airplane about 17 inches too short.

My Canopy required very little trimming. Be sure you're not moving the ends in too close (front and back). I used a dremel with a cutoff wheel to trim mine.

Bill
There is a dimension shown in the drawings for the front edge of the canopy to be 190mm behind the rivet line at the forward top skin to firewall. If I observe that distance the front fits great but the rear edge of the canopy is over 600mm back on the top middle skin. Do I have the right canopy?

Carroll,
I wouldn't get up tight about the front to back dimension of the bubble. What is critical is the vertical dimension. The bubble should be snug to the tubing hoops that it will be fastened to. I had to trim for that reason. I used masking tape to mark off the area to be trimmed. I started with half an inch at the center, tapering to zero at the sides. I used a Dremel with a cut-off wheel to trim. I actually had to trim the rear edge again. Take it in small increments. You can always trim more, but you sure can't put it back.

Just went into the shop and measured. The front of mine is right at 190 and the rear is about 250. My guess is you have the canopy for the 650.

Bill
Thanks for your help. I was wondering if you might do one more thing for me and measure the length of your canopy down the center. Mine measures 1900mm. The Zenith online parts store does not list a separate canopy for the 650, (That I can find) but they do brag about the larger 650 canopy in their sales literature. The way mine sits on the fuselage right now I've got about 10 inches of headroom and it extends from the firewall all the way back to the center of the top middle skin. That would be nice but I can't help but wonder what would happen to the aerodynamics.
Thanks again

Hey Carroll, Mine is 1600 (63")straight line front to back edge and about 1760 (69 1/4") over the top. As I said before my front edge is 190 from the firewall rivet line and the back is about 260 from the front edge of the top skin. Still seems to me that you have the wrong canopy but Zenith can tell you for sure. My kit was a quickbuild (notice I said was - after the upgrade it seems like I should have taken the extra money for the quickbuild and gone to Vegas) but the dimensions should be the same.

Thanks so very much Bill. I am waiting to hear from Zenith but I do have a plan of attack now.
Mine is scratch built and I stopped building when I anticipated the update coming so the modifications have not been too big a deal. I thought I would save money by scratch building but now I don't think so, what money Zenith didn't get UPS did. I'm retired so I don't consider my time very valuable which is a good thing because I am beginning my sixth year on this project.
