I went to www.smart.com and there they have a diesel for the four seater,
but not for the other models. It is interesting that their otto cycle
engines have two spark plugs per cylinder.

Hi Jari,
I am located in Europe. Actually looking to find a good deal on a 60 kW
Smart Roadster at the moment. Unfortuantely, prices are still too high.
However, I haven't spent too much time on the Smart car at all, so it was
new to me, that they also make a Diesel.
For our American friends (since the Smart is not sold in the US): The Smart
is a 2 seater car made by a JV with Chrysler Daimler. It is tiny even for
European standards - you probably can load two of those things on the flat
bed of a Ford 250 pickup. Engine is a 3 cyclinder 4 stroke engine (various
hp versions available). A few guys came out with a Smart engine converted
or
airplane use . The engine is light weight, burns mogas, and produces around
100 hp.

The Diesel Smart 2 seater is also on the Canadian pages. <http://www.thesmart.ca/index.cfm?id=4730>
For those in the US that may be interested, there is one importer/"americanizer" (<http://www.zapworld.com/cars/smartCar.asp>) but they are focused only on the gas model and availability is very limited. The Canadian version cannot be registered in the US.
Daimler-Benz keeps threatening to bring it to the US, but they are losing about $5,000 (US) on the ones they are selling in Europe so they're hesitant to do so. Rumors continue that they will do it "next year" and sell them through Mercedes dealers, but "next year" has been the last couple of model years.
Personally, I'd buy two tomorrow if they were available (one for me for my way too long commute, one for my 17 year old). It fits both our "missions" when driving. I think the US market is ripe for this type of auto introduction, similar to the Civic introduction during the mid/late 70's gas crisis.
