I'm in the process of calibrating my fuel tank and would like to know
what the reserve tank capacity and the overall tank capacity including
the reserve.
Any information would be much appreciated.

Hi John,
In our monowheel XS the tank holds 18.5 gallons with the fuel a few
inches from the top of the filler neck. The tank splits at the tunnel
at about 5 gallons, with 2.5 in the reserve side.

I have a total capacity 65.5 litres, 18 litres is the total amount in the
two compartments either side of the saddles, which means
9 litres reserve. There is a further 2 litres up the fuel intake corbra etc.

Hi! Tim
I have to question your statement that the "two tank bottoms either side of
the saddle totalling 18 litres" means 9 litres in the reserve. It is my
belief that the starboard side is the smaller of the two sides so only an
actual measure will provide the correct reserve amount? Either way it is
best not assumed but remove any doubt by doing a measure.

I have just filled and calibrated my tank for the first time and I set the single electronic gauge at full when I had filled 65 ltrs. I also have a sight gauge off each side but I have to say the levels were not that convincing. I filled 5 ltrs at a time. I then pumped/syphoned most of it out after doing the electric pump flow test (it just continues to flow once started). The electric gauge seemed right but again the sight tubes weren't that convincing.
I expected the starboard reserve to fill first, which it did.

Bob,
You may well be right. I do remember shutting off the starboard out and
draining the tank through the
port outlet leaving 9 litres left in the starboard compartment as a reserve.

I have found my sight tube to be next to useless when airborne but works well when filling on on the ground ( Tri Gear) I filled mine at 1 Litre at a time and marked the tube
in 5 litre's increments, the fuel gauge (avelec) in my case is very accurate but i prefer
Fuel flow used to give me reassurance when running low on the main tank.

The original Classic tank in N139AB held 2.5 gallons in each saddle. The tank itself when filled up to the upper level of the boss (fuel inlet with that horrible old hose) which means a slight amount of fuel in the filler tube, held 18 gallons.
The XS 2000-2004 with the horrible depression in the top of the tank also held 18 gallons.
Keep in mind, the tail dragger will hold less because of the trapped air in the front of the tank, unless there is some shacking and tail lifting involved.
The last set of tanks made with the diagonal reinforcement molded in the back (thanks to Roger and John), have a very flat top and is wider by some 1/2 inch or so. On replacing the original tank in N12AY (which cracked) with this new tank, my capacities are the same on the reserve side and main at 2.5 gallons each. The total capacity of the tank in the tri gear N12AY is 20 US gallons. This has been checked and verified three times and frankly welcomed on cross country. The fuel level at 20 gallons in the filler neck is 1/2 way up the tube. Gary Leinberger's is the same way after his tank swap.
The CFC modified fuel sight gauge (see " A sight gauge that really works" at www.customflightcreations.com) works both in flight or on the ground. Keep in mind, in the standard fuel system, the vents on the top of the aircraft cause some low pressure problems pulling the fuel in the sight gauge off a bit in flight, as does acceleration, deck angle etc. making it less than repeatable and accurate. Also, most inaccuracies in any sight gauge come from fuel trapped in the vent side of the site gauge (see crude drawing below). The indicated reading on the site gauge is greatly affected by this trapped fuel either with the CFC modified sight gauge or the standard. Being human, we run the sight gauge line with some areas that run down hill a bit and cause fuel to be trapped as it is tough to get fuel across the panel bottom, down the side, then up the windscreen and down the top to the vent. If this installation is done perfectly so it traps no fuel, the standard sight gauge is reasonably accurate. Retrofitting the CFC line is no picnic either if the tank buts up against the top of the tank compartment or a lot of foam is used on the top of the tank...
N12AY is equipped with JPI fuel totalizer, a sight gauge and a capacitance fuel probe. Only the capacitance fuel probe has been a problem when changing from ethanol enhanced fuel, to and from AV gas. Ah to have the float gauge. One piece of equipment I carry in my aircraft is a short piece of 1/4 inch hose to blow air down into the sight gauge vent in the filler neck to remove any trapped fuel if I find it inaccurate after spirited flying, turbulence or overfilling.

Hi Bud,
Regarding capacitance fuel gauges, you mentioned the error caused by the dielectric characteristics of different fuels. Does the gauge read more with 100LL Avgas than with unleaded Mogas, with ethanol or not, or is it the opposite?

True, With Mod 34 (the extension of the vent tube to the front of the tank) now standard, I still find the tail dragger forward tank section has a large air bubble on normal refuel without coaxing, whereas the trigear will tend to fill completely. It is not much gas, a half to one gallon, but you can never have enough gas, unless you are on fire.

It's that fore and aft up and down thrusting motion one uses to fill the tank of course.
As for the heat, yes it is, and with a barn full of repairs, new builds and two nearing first flight we're all exhausted.

In my Monowheel, I found that lifting the starboard wing while refueling allows to add about 3 more liters.
