Hi guys, interested in your advice for moving my kitfox project. I am getting ready to move down to Winston-Salem, NC from Elkton, MD.  I have a model IV project that I wish to take with me.  The fuselage is covered and on the gear, the wings are assembled but not mounted on the fuse, and the engine is hung on the fuse.  Horizontal stabilizer is not installed and of course I have a few boxes of various things.  



I am wondering if it would be best to find a used boat trailer and modify it, or if a simple flat-deck trailer (like landscapers use) would be best.  I have little time, about a week and a half, before I have to leave. I should have started on this a while ago, but getting ready to sell my house took up all my time.



I've found a few different trailers for sale locally on Craigslist, and have access to a small mig welder if I need to make modifications.  I'm interested in your thoughts of what would be most efficient in terms of time and cost while keeping my project safe for a 7 hour road trip.  Thanks for your help.

I moved my RV-4 from Georgia to Michigan.  It fit in a 26' UHaul with the wings and horizontal stabilizer removed.



It was nice being inside and protected from the rain, wind, road trash, etc during the move.

Sy, you are right on the money. This project has been my dream, yet it has sat in my garage for several years with no progress. I've been involved in so many other things relating to family, job changes, etc and i kept meaning "to get around to it", but never did. This move is a big change for me and my family, but one of my intentions is to get started on the kitfox and make it a priority before too many other distractions creep in at our new location.  I will let you know how that plan works out!

I modified a fairly light boat trailer by screwing 3/4" plywood onto  

the trailer. One piece was laid the long way, and one laid crossways,  

with cutouts to clear the fenders on the trailer. My wings were put  

together, but the fuel tanks were not installed. Without the fuel  

tanks in place, the wheels can be raised and stuck through the wings  

where the tanks would be. The wings then ride vertically, chord-wise,  

alongside the fuse, and resting on the leading edge...cushioned, of  

course. It is a VERY good idea to raise the tailwheel, and take  

advantage of the "through-the-fuselage" tube that allows for this.



When I first got the notion to travel to Texas (thanks, Jimmie) to  

pick up this unfinished plane, I made some late evening measurements  

of my trailer, installed the plywood the next morning and I was well  

on my way to leaving for Texas in a day or so.

I just recalled some details about my boat trailer modifications  

regarding the Kitfox....when I got to Texas (1300 mile trip), I moved  

the one piece of plywood closer to the front of the trailer, so that  

it would be under the tailwheel, and I recall now having built 1/4"  

"sides" on the floor to keep the big chunks of airplane from rolling  

off. : )

Get in and just do it, get the family involved, your life will change forever, your family will thank you for it.

Mark, About the only way I'd move that project is in an enclosed trailer with the wings hanging on the walls.

Mark, don't feel bad.  I moved my project in about the stage you see in Lynn's pictures.  It took me six years to finish then another year to fix what I broke trying to fly it with minimal tail wheel experience, then another six years to get brave enough to try it again after getting the proper training.  



Today I am doing my on 4th annual condition inspection and enjoying every minute of it so much I can't hardly stand it.



Anyhow on moving your kitfox.  I used a rental Rider 24 foot van.  That will probably be pretty expensive as you seem to be traveling much futher.  You can probably do it much less cheap...er... inexpensive  buying a boat trailer and using Lynn's photos for a guide.  Transporting the wings leading edge down is the same as I did.



Lynn, is that Jimmie in your photo?  I had many conversations with him while I was building.  Some extra parts from my Kit are now in your airplane.  Bet you didn't know that.

Nope, those are two neighbors of mine....both looking kinda doubtful  

about what their neighbor just dragged home. But the "fat guy with a  

beard", as he calls himself, has been up in my plane several times,  

so he's a doubter no more. : )



What parts are those, Tom? Some of the parts that I got from Jimmie I  

didn't use....

It was some hard foam for the rudder gap seal and some intercostals and stuff for an airfoil tail all labeled "Serries 5".  Jimmie was wanting to make the airfoil tail and was missing some parts so I sent them to him.



My kit is a Classic four but I think the old Skystary people just put all the extra stuff they had left over on the shelves in the crate.  I spent a lot of time on the phone with skystar trying to convince them I did't have an engine cradle or any fuel system parts at all for a classic four and trying to figure out what a lot of the other stuff in the crate was.



By the way if anyone is wondering, these are not the current kitfox factory people.

   You hang in there.  I started on my AVID project in August of 1990.  I finally flew it for the first time on June 14, 2011.  It was all worth the wait of the off and on again building schedule.  DON'T GIVE UP.
