I'm curious how many different flap positions people use. Do you put in full
flaps, half then full, 10, 15, full, what? And when do you do what on
 approach?

I just look out the window (visual flap position indicator) and add a what
looks like about a 1/4 of the travel of the flap. If I want more to slow
the plane and/or increase the angle of descent, I lower the flaps some more,
each time taking a quick glance out the window.

Not to be flippant, but it is really that simple. I don't have a flap
indicator on the panel, and I don't think I'll ever want one.

Just or the record, I'm a 150 hour (or so) pilot with a tailwheel rating, so
I'm not terribly experienced. I've flown 152s, 172s, Cherokees, Super Cubs
and Huskys. All of them either have a flap position indicator or detents in
the manual flap actuator. My XL doesn't have either, and I even notice it.

My CH640 has an indicator because you cannot see the flaps from the cockpit. However, I found it takes 5 seconds for full flap deployment, so 1 second on the switch = 10 degrees which I find easier than looking down at the indicator. For a normal pattern I use 10 at the end of downwind, another 10 on base, then the rest on final based upon how steep my approach needs to be. I like to turn base to final fairly high so I can always make the runway in the event of engine failure. With 50 degrees of flaps you can come down pretty steep if you need to.

The Beech J35 I flew for 15 years had no flap position indicator and just a spring loaded switch (no detent). In the early days I may have looked out at the flaps (not easy to do at night), but I normally just moved them by counting seconds and the feel of the aircraft. The only XL I have flown was the exact same way. So I am not planning to use an indicator in XL.

Bruce, I have an indicator on my XL and have never had the time while landing
to try to find it. As you say, if I needed to see it, a quick peek out to the
left would do it. Also, I have found on the XL, flap landings are the rarity.
With any cross wind at all you will not enjoy the ride, and you don't really
need them. By the time you bleed off the speed just short of stall you are
barely moving anyway. Best regards, Bill of Georgia

I agree with Bill. Although I only have about a dozen landings in the xl now I don't like landing with full flaps. I have decided that my landings are much better with no flaps or only 10deg flaps. Jack at Fresno- Chandler right now..
