Builders,

Is there anyone out there who is using the "aerodynamic" ribs on the
vert stab and rudder? Since you wind up with a concave and convex
surface it virtually eliminates the gap. I was wondering how much
difference the ribs make and if it would help any to seal what little
bit of gap that is left. I'm also curious why Skystar didn't make
similar ribs for the horizontal stab and elevator. This would likewise
eliminate the "gap problem". Has anyone made their own set of ribs for
the horizontal surfaces to achieve the same affect? What (if any)
difference was there in the flying characteristics? I'm wondering how
critical the shape of the horizontal surfaces are since it's basically
another wing. By adding the gap seals, it changes the shape and from
what everyone is saying, makes quite a difference.

Later
Bill

Bill,

I did as you suggest, but have no before only after performance numbers as I
did the mod while building. The story was that I wanted electric trim and
not wanting to exceed my kit budget, I ordered the horiz stab with the trim
tab cutout in the weldment, but didn't order the servo, ribs etc. That
resulted in a bit of a dilemma as the servo was about an inch thick and the
leading edge of the elevator was 5/8 tube and the trailing edge was 3/8
tube. I wasn't aware of the double airfoil rib setup so designed my own
which resulted in gap closure in both the horizontal and vertical tails.

Photos and a drawing are at:

The airplane is pretty fast, but I have lots of speed fairings and most
importantly the elev trim eliminates the need to trim with flaperons.
Before I tweaked what I thought was one blade that had drifted on the last
annual, I was consistently 70 mph at 4000 rpm, 100 mph at 5000 rpm and just
under 115 mph at 5500 rpm. Now I am indication a bit more than that,
hitting almost 120 mph at 5500 and in climb I am down to about 850 from
1000 ft per min. My field elev is 1285 in the books.

I have no trouble three pointing, but have the lighter Roax 912 engine, so
haven't had the forward CG issue.
