Good, properly-updated anti-virus should have caught this. I don't know the extent of the infection nor the characteristics of this particular worm/trojan/virus so I can't comment further. But many of the newer viruses are pretty clever about co-opting the anti-virus software and the OS in order to make themselves invisible, so that even if you do a scan, nothing is found.
The safe way is to boot the system from a separate disk that has the anti-virus program on it and then run the anti-virus against the infected disk that way. This ensures that the OS and anti-virus haven't already be compromised by the virus.

The downloadable fix for this?
The Linux operating system.
The friendliest by far is Ubuntu.

Linux is good. Personally I prefer MacOS. It has all the joy of Unix without the incompatibilities that come with new libraries every year.
