I have a Skytec starter with just over 600 hours and recently it started to make an awful grinding noise when starting the engine. The noise seems to quite as soon as the engine starts (a little hard to tell over the noise of the engine). Looking at the flywheel and bendix gear I expected to see a storage wear pattern, and there is a slight one but not really the indication I expected if it wasn't fully engaging. It runs great off the engine and the bendix seems to fully extend, but I know a starter can give a false sense of security when it isn't under any load.

Any thoughts on what the culprit might be?

Thanks,
Marcus

Probably a bearing going bad in the starter. Don't know what their
current charge is, but was around $150 last time I needed it, and they
shipped it out repaired the same day they received it.

It looks normal, is it possible to replace just that part?

Thanks,
Marcus

Quality Aircraft Accessories in Tulsa can now overhaul Skytec starters.
I would send it to them.

Thank you,
Just curious though, would it be better to send it to Quality Aircraft Accessories than right to Skytec?

Thanks again. Skytec says to send it to them, I'm just curious what the advantage would be to sending it to Quality?

Thanks again to Rhonda for helping out with info on Quality Aircraft Accessories. Just to pass on some details, I called them and it turns out they don't do repairs but stock rebuilt units for a quick turn. Only Sky-Tec can work on the starters. $388 including a $100 core charge (I presume that leaves $288 as that is also what Sky-Tec charges for a rebuild). 30 Days to return your core for the refund. Might be a good place to go if you are scrambling for a starter and Sky-Tec is out of stock.

Just wanted to give an update on my starter situation. Being pretty confident the noise was from the starter (although it ran smooth without a load off the airplane), and that it was likely the kickback protection causing the racket I called Sky-Tec who said they would evaluate the starter, repair and send it back the same day so off it went in the mail. I got a call the day it arrived there and the technician said it made an awful noise on the test stand, whereupon I said that's why I sent it but was quite glad to hear it wasn't something else. The crazy thing is he couldn't find anything wrong with it. He then said it also could not be rebuilt (I'm not sure if it was due to being an older model or the uncertainty of the problem) but they would send me a brand new one with the self-reseting clutch for the price of rebuilding mine. Needless to say I was very impressed with these folks and would not hesitate to send anyone there way for a starter or repair work, I wish everyone dealt with customers like this!
