Hi All,
I looking to see if anyone has had starter soleniod or starter motor problems?
I was doing a propeller balance last night and I went to re start the engine and I was greeted with a "click". I checked the cable connections and they were tight.
My initial thought was that the soleniod contacts were dirty or worn, but I found that if I rotated the propeller then it would kick over okay so now I not sure.
Before start pulling things apart I'd like to know if anyone has had problems in this area.
Thanks, Paul

Paul,
While solenoids "can" be the problem, that's not always the case. Worn
starter brushes are more common. You said turning the prop made it
start. Was the starter drive, perhaps stuck in the flywheel ring?
Might want to check that the starter is bolted down tight. If nothing
obvious comes up, bring the starter and solenoid to a repair shop,
specializing in starter/alternator repair and let them have a look...

Just a thought. Would be worth checking you have a good earth connection to the starter body. We had intermittent starter probs a while back and this turned out to be the cause.

Hi Paul,
Yes I had a problem with the starter relay on two occasions:
Once I had a click as you described. With another pilot in the cockpit I managed to short circuit the secondary coil of the relay to activate the starter so that I can go back home. Afterwards I fitted a new relay. I tested the old one on the bench and found it to be working properly, so I do not know the real cause of the problem.
The other issue was just the opposite: the relay became stuck and I had not identified the problem before take off, so I flew one half hour with the starter running. Of course I cooked the starter motor. I have since installed a starter engaged warning light.
Hope that helps
Regards
Remi
