Heard from John Hutson. He informed me that the fuel cell coating
used on the XPs was Jeffco.

Went out and scraped the inside and found that Ray Thurman was right.
The gray areas in the photos of my cells are Jeffco and the dark areas
are where the Jeffco is gone.

Why are the areas where the Jeffco is gone black ? ? ?

Question: John,,,, was a primer used on the fuel cell under the Jeffco ? ?

Question: If the original coating was Jeffco and it is not holding up
to MoGas, why should I expect a re-coating of Jeffco to be any better
? ? ?

Question: If the epoxy used in construction of the wing is not damaged
by 100LL why can't I just put the end plates back on and use just
AvGas ? ??

The Jeffco is probably cracking due to the wing twisting in flight.

I would use PRC to seal the tank, specially at the joints to the spar. This will seal any pin holes in the composite.

The composition of Mogas here in NZ must be different - - thankfully. My wings are slow built, at home. The procedure included a layer of light weight glass, 3oz I think, on the inside of the wing tank module before glueing it to the spar. Then an extra coating of epoxy more or less floated on to make sure that pin holes were filled. After assembly the tank had two coats of Jeffco applied.

I had my end plates off about a year ago, 12 years after first filling with fuel. I've used Mogas consistently, with the occasional top up with 100LL. The Jeffco looked as good as new. Still the glossy grey colour. No sign of deterioration or discolouration anywhere.

As far as I know, there is no ethanol in NZ Mogas, or at least none in the brand that I use.

Actually I can't see the sense of adding ethanol to Mogas anyhow. It costs more to produce than the energy saving, and is just as damaging environmentally - -- but that is just my political bias, and no politician is going to listen to me.
