I took my CJ for a short hop yesterday. Upon landing, the gill shutters were coated with oily mist. It feels heavier than my Phillips XC 25-60, but lighter than the grease used in the prop hub. Looking through the gill shutters, the engine case appeared dry. I was in a hurry to get home so did not closely exam the source of the leak. The prop was holding rpm just fine the entire flight, and responded normally when changed rpm.
Can anyone read the tea leaves and tell where the leak is coming from?
Thanks in advance,
Robin Hou

Hi Robin;

Very strange!

I don’t believe the prop is the culprit.
The prop blade partially shown in the photo shows no evidence of grease (or oil) leakage. Oil leakage from the prop has to originate in the pitch change area, usually one or both of the piston/cylinder seals or from the transfer tube gasket in the crankshaft. A leaking inner seal or tube gasket will leak into the hub and out past the blade grease seals. Both of those and a leaking outer seal will also leak from the front of the hub and transfer oil to the blades.

This leak is originating behind the prop. The most likely source is the crankshaft thrust bearing. Unlike horizontally opposed engines there is no seal or gasket to prevent thrust bearing lube oil from leaking out. In most radials (though I do not know for sure how the Huosai does it) there is a simple slinger ring between the inner race of the bearing and the bearing thrust nut on the crankshaft. This collects the bearing oil and “slings” it back into the nose case.

The usually reason for leakage from that location is pressure in the case due to a blocked vent.

Not good at reading tea leaves so the above is just a wild assed guess (WAG).

Good luck;
Walt

When was the last time the seals in the prop hub piston were replaced? If not from there, check the prop shaft seal. First guess is the hub piston inner and outer seals.

Probably a seal in the prop. Either the oil tube seal or the seal on the rim of the piston if the CJ hub is built Ike the YAKs.

Upon closer examination, the grease is leaking from the bottom blade in the pictures. Its previous owner still monitors the list and emailed me that it was last resealed many years ago, so I am sure it is about time to have it opened up, gone over and resealed.
Thank you Dennis and Walter for your comments. And Bill, when it is on fire I will call you to accept your offer Wink

Robin,I really doubt that the oil came from the prop as in a bad dome seal, or grease from the blade seal. You would see oil or grease streaks on the prop and you would have had oil and grease on the wings and fuse also. I think Walt's WAG is most likely close to the actual cause.

Easiest way to find out is to Pull the prop hub dome and piston and look inside the hub. If there is oil inside the hub, replace the piston inner seal (also replace the outer seal) and make sure the oil tube is 100% tight.

Agreed. Going to have to do that anyway. Betting on oil from he piston sea pong through the bearings on the prop base.
