Hi Gang. Mid flight we experienced a vibration in the engine. Upon landing a mag check revealed vibration on mag 2. In test, cylinder #1 is cold on mag 2. In order: replaced spark plug, tested lead (was good), cleaned mag cap, replaced mag cap, replaced lead. Still cold cylinder on mag 2; but, runs properly on mag 1. It is hard to believe that the mag or rotor or points are bad since only one cylinder is affected. Thoughts?!

Most likely the proverbial ignition harness problem. The plug wire
insulation may be cracked causing the plug wire to arc to the braided
shield which is of course, grounded. Not an easy task to pull a new
wire through the harness. And when doing this job, you keep your
fingers and toes crossed hoping and praying the old and new wire do not
separate inside the ring when you are pulling it through.

You may want to consider doing the automotive conversion that over 500
Yak and CJ owners all over the world have done to eliminate the
"Achilles Hee"l of the Housai and M14 engines, the ignition harness.
You can read all about it here.

Check for an intake leak at the cylinder as well.

Also, did you do a compression test on the cylinder? If not, might be a
good idea. Listen carefully for intake and exhaust leaks while doing
the compression test.

Perhaps consider a new lead, running it outside the collar just to confirm. If that turns out to be the issue, unless you are a purist, I would not hesitate for a second replacing the old harness with the conversion Dennis mentions. I'd put this at the top of my "money well spent" list.

George, What is the best way to check for an intake leak at the cylinder?

Check the connections at the cylinder and at the supercharger housing.

So more or less just checking for loose connections/tightness
I guess ...

Personally, when I have a cylinder that fires on one mag and does not fire on another, I will stay with it being an ignition problem until I see a nice strong spark coming from the spark plug in question. Then it might be time to move on to other things. Checking compression and intake tubes is all good troubleshooting for a cylinder that will not fire .... at all. When it fires on one mag and does not fire on the other mag, seems kind of odd to me for it to be anything other than ignition, but hey .. it never hurts to check. If you look at the intake tubes and the compression is reasonable, move back to the ignition.

I assume you have the stock ignition harness? Good time to change it.

In any case, if you remove the plug from the cylinder and attach the spark plug lead to the spark plug and attach a wire to ground from the plug metal case, if you spin that mag fast enough, you ought to be able to see it spark. I'd remove the rear or forward plugs from the engine so you can really spin the prop through by hand with speed. Then hook up plug number (anything other than 2) as I just mentioned. Spin the prop through fast and the observer ought to be able to see the spark plug fire. Now that you have verified that it has worked, try the same test again with the bad cylinder. See what happens. There is no better proof of seeing what is happening with a spark plug than looking straight at the darn thing.

Mark

p.s. Before you try any of this, start the engine on both mags and using an IR Heat Gun that reads out temperatures, run the engine with both mags at about 50% or so for some 15 minutes (more or less) and read the cylinder head temps. See if #2 is WAY WAY off from the others. If it is, I'd go with something wrong with fuel air ratio (intake tubes, etc.) If the temps are within range of all the other cylinders..,. I really would go back to ignition.

Ether is the best thing to spray at the individual intake tube gland
nuts at the supercharger case as well as on the other end of the tube at
the cylinder. If the rpm increases, it's leaking. Obviously, the
engine has to be running. So be very careful, not only of the prop, but
the exhaust stack which will burn the crap out of you if you
accidentally touch it.

Another test you can do before the Ether test - Just for grins, measure
the resistance of the wire from the plug to the staking screw in the mag
cap. Check the one that you believe is bad and then check one that you
know is good and compare the resistance. Like for example, if #1 front
is bad, check that one and then go to #3 front because the wires are in
firing order in the cap. The rotor turns counterclockwise. When you
turn the cap over, it will be clockwise rotation. Assuming the ignition
harness is the original harness, the resistance should be very close to
zero ohms on a good wire.
