What diameter, pitch and thickness should the CATTO 3 bladed propeller be for the TR-4? Bob, what are the numbers did you use for your CATTO prop?

Galin,

I honestly don't remember the specs on the prop. I discussed the requirements with Catto before I ordered the prop and gave him the specs on engine choice, maximum diameters and air(from KIS Specs) and what I was looking for from the prop

I discussed the requirements with Catto before I ordered the prop and gave him the specs on engine choice, maximum diameters and air speed (from KIS Specs) and what I was looking for from the prop (quiet operation). He will be able to determine the best setup for what you are looking for.

Thanks Bob. Next time you are at your hangar check the prop. It might have a "data plate" of some kind somewhere on it.

It should have a SN that will give Catto all the details.

Galin,

Hate to admit this but I haven't been to the hangar in at least 8 or 9 months now. I can't believe it's been that long but time is just rushing by. Some health issues cropped up last October and it was March before I found out what was wrong and started making some improvement. Since March I have been spending all my time on a work contract from an old customer in Houston which I really didn't want but felt obligated to do. I have only been doing this guy's systems for 30 years and the last time was 10 years back. Great money but I would really rather have had the time instead.  I had hoped it would be quick and easy but is turning into a long term deal.

I will see if I can put hands on the paperwork or make a trip out to the hangar and get the info. Hell, I need my tools back at the house anyway since the wife is growing tired of "All the tools are at the hangar!" excuses.

Galin,
The health problem turned out to be Type II Diabetes which was a total shock to me since I had never had any weight problems and no warning. The symptoms were classic but didn't all appear all at once so I didn't put two and two together. I just felt tired and had zero energy. It wasn't until I started losing weight by the day that I realized it was more than just the winter time blues. Lost over 20 lbs in 6 weeks without changing my diet. Was real close to checking into the hospital when I was finally able to get doctors appointment. By that time I was really feeling too tired to do anything beyond working. Weekends were spent sleeping.
That was then and the recovery has been good but it took much longer than I expected. I am back to where I was but really have to watch my diet and fluid intake. I have a doctors appointment tomorrow and expect him to update my diagnosis to controlled diabetic status. Still working on diet changes that hopefully will allow me to drop the medications as well. We will see but at least now the numbers are great.
If I can get this systems contract under control as well then I should be able to return to work on the plane. Very disappointed that progress has once again been delayed. I might be able to make a trip out to the hangar this weekend if I can get rid of a house full of company. I will let you know.

Hi Galin,
I would recommend the whirlwind ground adjustable propeller. It is about the same weight as a catto or prince fixed pitch, but you can adjust it to be exactly what you want and if you do drag reduction stuff (like the vans wheel pants) you can just adjust the pitch instead of sending the prop back for rework or a new prop.
Compared to my old prince fixed prop the whirlwind ground adjustable is about 5% more efficient at 10-12,000 feet. At 10,500', I got 174 KTAS at 8.5 gph with the prince and 178 KTAS at 8.1 gph with the WW set at the same pitch as the prince.   The prince is better at low altitude (3-4,000').
