Mark, are you using power from the airplane or the battery on the radio? If you are connected to the aircraft power try unplugging it and running it straight from the battery. If you have an intercom installed and it is powered by the aircraft you could have the noise entering there. My turn and bank indicator was producing a lot of hash until I did some filtering inside it.
Your best source for clean power is to run a cable to the battery where it can do its job. Yes a filter can help but it can be difficult to find just where the noise is being injected into the system. If you have an intercom and a pigtail on your radio you may be able to bypass the intercom for a test. Loose screws on the headset plug wires can allow electrical noise to enter the system too. Clean and tighten all the connections.

Subject: Radio Engine Noise
I have had my Pulsar for a long time...18 years....always has some engine noise on transmission
But is seems to be much worse on transmission....engine noise
I am using a handheld Icom radios attached to the dash and always had good luck
I think I have an Icon IC-A23 now
Anyone had good luck with noise filters ?
Thanks

Had same problem.
Went to Radio Shack bought a couple noise suppression coils. Ran leads from voltage regulator through them. Killed the noise.
Learned that from the electrical engineer at the last Pulsar gathering. If he is listening maybe he can be more specific.

Look at Mouser;

These clamp on suppressors are fairly good but some experimentation may be required. You can also buy ferrite cores and route the power leads through them, which requires a bit more work but has the potential of being more effective. I think this is what Bob did. Make sure you have a good ground between all of your electronics and the engine case, that may solve your problem by itself.

Those in line noise suppression coils are a great step in resolving the radio noise.
If the noise is something that has progressively gotten worse, I would first expect a weakend connection. Weak grounds are hard to isolate because a radio can source its ground for the power source from many places (the power lead itself, the headset jacks, the radio's antenna all use ground connections). I once cleared up several problems, radio noise, a gauge reading inaccurately, by simply cleaning and making a better battery negative to the engine casing cable better (only after checking and tightening every ground connection behind the instrument panel.
The reason I think there is a weak connection also is the noise is more noticeable on transmit. A radio draws very little power when receiving, but when transmitting the radio draws many times more power, which when depending on a poor connection, more, ignition noise gets coupled through the wrong path (i.e. antenna ground, headset grounds) and your radio ends up more vulnerable to noise.
With our Rotax engines, there is allot of vibration that every connection has to deal with, and electrical terminations that look okay can add a couple of tenths of ohms of resistance that propagate noise issues.
My suggestion, is first check every ground path from radio input power, through the connection to the starter battery, through the engine ground. Then do the same for the positive 12 volts (typically red leads).
If you choose or just want to try the inductor (in line coil) you can not only get them at Radio Shack, but any major auto supply (Pep Boys, AutoZone, Advanced Auto) sells them as well and may be a bit cheaper.
I hope this is of some help.
