Charlie Smith just forwarded a note that indicated that Jerzy Krasinski’s Cruiser was destroyed in a fire. I am very sad to hear this, as I have seen this plane and he did a really nice job. I am not sure if he is still a member of the matronics list, but if so, my condolence on his loss.

Bill,
Just discovered Jerzy's Cruiser was destroyed in a fire at start-up late last month. I checked Matronics and saw nothing there. Thought I'd alert you since he may need some comforting words from the group at this time. I couldn't find anything on Google about it so I presume he wasn't injured. At least I hope he's ok.

Just checked out the link and was glad to hear that it was not an injury accident but so sorry to see that the damage was from the instrument panel forward. That in all probability means the aircraft can not be repaired. There might be a significant number of useful parts for the KIS community though if anyone is in a position to take it.
Jerzy, I am really sorry to hear this and hope everything works out OK.

Bill, Thank for posting this information. Words cannot describe how bad I feel when yet another KIS is in the totaled column. I fired an email off to AIG for more information. I may bid on it - does anybody have any idea what a burned up IO-360 is worth (probably little value in the rest of the airplane but if I can get my hands on a TR-4 I'd mold up parts for that one too)? I did not realize Jersy had a MT prop on the airplane.
Robert - Its composite, and as long as the spars are intact that puppy can be brought back to life.
Bill - Is there any update on Charlie Smiths TR-4? Is he still building or maybe even flying it?
Well...since this is a really bad post I got more bad news I been sitting on that I was going to post on my next update but WTH - We lost another TR-1, not totaled but will need lots of attention. The 3rd owner of Ralph Bernhardt's KIS was making a nasty crosswind landing, when the wind planted the wing tip first, and the rest of the plane hit hard collapsing the nose gear while shearing off the prop. More on this in my update later this week.
Jersy I am so sorry for you loss, my thoughts are with you.
In sadness,
Mark T.

Bob and Bill,
Thank you. I was not injured, but as you can see shit happens.
If anyone uses Ellison carb - better be aware.
The damage was from the firewall forward .
In addition the plane suffered bad burn/wrinkling of the left side of the fuselage to the front of the wing.
Also, the bottom of the fuselage is burned with honeycomb separated down to the front of the flaps. The firewall survived as a fire barrier during the fire, but it would have to be replaced for structural reasons.
No way to get properly shaped honeycomb for replacement.
I thought it was possible to fix it making a bunch of ribs on the right side of the fuselage and transfer them to the left side. After removing of the burned wall a new wall could be built of glass/foam/glass on these ribs.
The engine looks that it might be still good but the accessories are less certain.
The small accessories are for sure shot.
The German three blade electric constant speed propeller has two blades with damaged back surfaces- a few layers of fiberglass are burned. I do not know precisely how deep. Fiberglass seems to be repairable since the damage is limited to the outer regions and the blades seem to be solidly connected to the metal roots There is enough room for overlapping the fiberglass on the blades, but the front edge plastic is deformed by fire. Two options here. One option is to remove the plastic from all blades and make fiberglass fronts instead. That could be done totally at home. The other option is to send the whole thing to the company for replacement or repair (if they find it possible) of these two blades.
I was convinced by the insurance company to total the plane, so here we are.
I thought I posted a short note about the fire on the Matronics list, but either I made a mistake and did not send it, or more likely I have been removed from the list because I did not see anything coming from the list for a long time.

A friend of mine had an E-Racer catch on fire and burn to the ground. Had an IO540 in it, and the engine rebuilder said that there was minimal work to make it airworthy.
Good luck

Graham,
I am glad, too.
Good to remember that the fire would not stop until all the fuel boils out of the fuel filter. The bigger the filter the bigger the trouble.
Another thing, in case of an engine fire do not blow from the fire extinguisher into the cooling inlets at the front of the cowl. . That is against the hot air flow. Blow it into the exhaust of the cooling air at the bottom of the cowl.
Regards,
Jerzy

was it an engine back fire that started it?.. A friend's RV6A caught fire just after he had topped off
the tanks and was trying to startup. He got a back fire that started the fire. luckily he got it
put out with minor damage inside the engine cowling.

As one Cruiser dies, another is being born. I've partnered up with
Brazilian pilot for TAM airlines to use my Cruiser as a platform for his
engine development-
a modified Jaguar engine. He's displaying his engine on YouTube:

building progresses.

Bill,
Just discovered Jerzy's Cruiser was destroyed in a fire at start-up late last month. I checked Matronics and saw nothing there. Thought I'd alert you since he may need some comforting words from the group at this time. I couldn't find anything on Google about it so I presume he wasn't injured. At least I hope he's ok.

NICE. Is it a Gasoline or Diesel engine?

To be honest, I don't know. I never asked him when we met in Florida and I didn't understand a word he said in the video (Portuguese).
I don't know if Jaguar has a diesel.

Jersy – what is on the panel, are there any vacuum Instruments, and what radios are installed? Were you always running with the Ellison TBI, or is it a recent addition? What prop were you running before the MT?
I did study the pictures more closely. The upper corner of the fuselage aft of the firewall really took a hit with the outer skin, core, and almost the inner skin burned through. The lower fuselage where the lower landing gear bracket attached must have burned away. The fuselage under the main spar looks very suspect, you can almost see the spar outline in the charred surface.
I checked out some of the other components on the web. The MT prop is very dear indeed, listed at Vans for a cool $12,350 USD. It is 72 inch in diameter, is electrically actuated, and will cost you 49 pounds. A six year standard rebuild runs $3,300 to $3,500 USD (saw one rebuild at $5,000). The blades are very special too – a metal core with carbon fiber laminated with a metal mesh for lighting strikes, and a special copper coating to discharge static. The protective electroplated metal leading edges are very high tech, and are really neat. Repairing the blades is probably not recommended. I imagine the cost of a new set would run near $6,000 USD. The prop hub was burning for a while so I would think that any electrical coils in the mechanism are now compromised. The cost of the rebuild, the blades, and possibly other components would probably be near the cost of a new prop.
The Franklin 220 hp. engine is a very popular replacement for the old Continental O-300s. They do duty in many Alaskan bush planes. They seem to hold up, and are known for smooth operation. Cylinders are steel lined cast aluminum. Dry weight is 297 plus everything else. Installed on the TR-4 with the MT tips 400 pounds. Ouch! Some people love the Franklin, and have learned its quarks, others have no love for them, but maybe only because they have not been exposed to them. On the down side there are few people that work on them, and some parts are hard to come by. The factory has a website, and there is a USA dealer in Ft. Collins, CO. This engine would need the accessories, wiring, and soft parts replaced, Additionally I would worry the case might be warped from the heat – how hot did it get? I think the engine cost about $15,000 to $17,000 when this one was purchased.
