Here are pics of the tank I fashioned for my plane.

Specs:
Drager 4500 PSI 60 min Carbon Fiber Wrapped Aluminum Tank.
Weight 10 lbs
Length 21"
Diameter 7"
Hydro Tested to 7500 PSI.

Fittings:
Stainless Steel SCBA to NPT Adapter
NPT to AN #4 Male Adapter.
This should fit in the same bracket where the stock tanks lives. All thats left is to create an aluminum tube pigtail with an AN B-Nut on one end and the Chinese Nut on the other.

Jax Fluid Technologies 904-642-2093 is a nearby source for Swagelok tubing/ferrules/valves that might help you finish things off. You should do a Red Star article when all done with your setup...looks good. Keep us posted.

Sam,

Good question. Unfortunately High Pressure tanks have to be seamless so a drain port is not a possibility. This is why it's important to keep your air dryer serviced. But since it's aluminum rust isn't an issue. Would have to make it part of the annual service routine to remove and dump.

Not quite sure I understand your question. Are you referring to the main air tank or the emergency tank scenario I illustrated?

Nothing changes WRT to the main air tank mod. Its just a simple replacement. The air pressure in the tank would be whatever you have your pressure relief valve set to, generally 50 bar or about 750 PSI.
With the emergency tank, there is no input to the emergency bottle. It is standalone with just output to the emergency circuit. The pressure in the bottle is 4500 PSI, regulated down to 800 PSI.

Another difference between the YAK-50 and YAK-52 original design.

On the 52, the emergency bottle is only filled via the aircrafts external fill port. Main bottle is filled by either the external fill port, or the engine compressor.

On the YAK-50, both bottles are filled by the engine compressor or the external fill port.

Not sure why they were designed differently, but that said the 52 emergency bottle is a one shot kind of thing, once it empty, it's empty. On the 50, you can close it, wait for it to pump up in-flight and try it again.

On the YAK-50, both bottles are filled by the engine compressor or the external fill port.

Not sure why they were designed differently, but that said the 52 emergency bottle is a one shot kind of thing, once it empty, it's empty. On the 50, you can close it, wait for it to pump up in-flight and try it again.

Another difference between the YAK-50 and YAK-52 original design.

“Since it’s aluminum rust isn’t an issue”. That may be the case but only if it is pure aluminum which is protected from corrosion by it’s own oxide layer. If it is an alloy that protection is seriously degraded depending on the alloy composition and strength.

Pure aluminum has a strength something like cheddar cheese. However if the entire strength of the tank is derived from the carbon fibre wrapping then pure aluminum would be suitable.
Something to consider.

Good question. Unfortunately High Pressure tanks have to be seamless so a drain port is not a possibility. This is why it's important to keep your air dryer serviced. But since it's aluminum rust isn't an issue. Would have to make it part of the annual service routine to remove and dump.

Fittings:

Stainless Steel SCBA to NPT Adapter

NPT to AN #4 Male Adapter.



This should fit in the same bracket where the stock tanks lives. All thats left is to create an aluminum tube pigtail with an AN B-Nut on one end and the Chinese Nut on the other.

Nothing changes WRT to the main air tank mod. Its just a simple replacement. The air pressure in the tank would be whatever you have your pressure relief valve set to, generally 50 bar or about 750 PSI.
With the emergency tank, there is no input to the emergency bottle. It is standalone with just output to the emergency circuit. The pressure in the bottle is 4500 PSI, regulated down to 800 PSI.

Yep you're correct, if it's not the right alloy, it could be a problem. Fortunately these things are strictly regulated. The aluminum tanks by themselves are rated for 2260 PSI, the Carbon Fiber brought them up to 4500 PSI. Again, at the pressures I'm going to run it at, its not an issue at all. Also remember aluminum scuba tanks are made of the same stuff and live in salt water all their lives. At the end of the day it's all about diligent maintenance.

The reason I'm doing this because I'm terrified of my current 40 yr old steel welded tank, that I have no reliable history on, and can't get hydrotested locally. Yes I know there is some place I can ship it to, but I have several issues with that. I'd rather be able to do it locally and have it back the next day. And I like the fact that it's tested to known parameters (7500 PSI), and a guy is willing to put his name on it and certify it.

But since it doesn't fit where the original tank goes I've given my self a good reason to mount it where it will be VERY easy to remove Smile The stock tanks lives under my smoke system and Battery box, shelf and I'm going to have to remove everything to get the bottle out.
