I know a lot of people here are fairly knowledgeable on paint so I was
wondering if some one could recommend a good paint primer system for
painting steel. I have this large steel structure I am setting up in
the back yard to raise and lower an antenna tower and I need to paint it
so it doesn't rust and look hideous. I would like something fairly
durable but just need to protect it from the rain. I don't want to
spend too much money. I'm not looking for a super fine glossy surface
just something to stop it from rusting. Can you get good deals on paint
over the Internet or are there hazmat charges that make it even more
expensive? It is a stationary structure. If you are unclear what I am
talking about you can see a computer model of it here..

Thanks for the advice.

Chris,

Visit your local farm supply store -- look for tractor paint. Stops rust ,
even if there is some light rust (farmer's don't have elegant prep and paint
booths). Lasts a long time. Easy to use. Won't produce body shop quality
shine and smoothness, but then a farmer's objective is pretty much the same
as yours - protect the steel. Don't much care what it looks like. Colors are
limited - black, white, green, red, maybe others if you are lucky. Black
lasts the longest.

Cheers,

David (Doc) Custer

Chris,
Check out PPG's commercial coatings line. Most auto refinsh suppliers that
handle PPG has it or can get it readily. It is a urethane, is inexpensive,
easy to apply, dries quickly, and does leave a good gloss.
