Morning All,
I am looking to retrofit MOD 52 to get the MTOW increase. My Europa, when purchased, has MOD72 with the articulating rear sockets installed. I want to check my understanding, because I am in touch with Europa about exactly what I need to purchse. (The aircraft records show that the whole of MOD52 was purchased, but this was not passed on to me as part of the sale so therefore it is difficult for Karen to work out what I need).
If I understand correctly:-
MOD52 is divided into three main parts:-
1) Main Wing Spar socket and Pin size increase from 3/8" to 1/2"
2) The Tie Bar (with W26A/B/C)
3) Spar Strap
MOD 74 is divided into two main parts: -
1) Wing rear pin reinforcement
2) The Tie Bar (without W26A/B/C)
This, I think, then means that because my aircraft was fitted with Mod74 with W26A/B/C; then I only need to focus on the Main Wing Spar Socket and Pin size increase and the Spar Strap.
Does that sound right?
Thanks
Jon

Hi Jon, I had the same situation and sorted it out thus, this summer; I found the tie-bar fitted during MOD 74 was re-useable without any changes, but i had to replace the rear lift pins (which meant opening the wing up again to gain access to the nyloc nuts), fit the articulating rear pin sockets in place of the originals - ensuring that the wing sweep does not change, change both sets of spar bushes to accommodate the larger diameter pins and install the (new) spar strap. Karen shopuld be able to sell you the "MOD52 post MOD 74" parts kit . . . I hope that helps. Clive.

Hi Clive,
Thanks for the reply. I don't yet fully understand all aspect of the MOD, I am working on the paper work more through today.
With your description of your experience, I have understood that you didn't have W26A, W26B and W26C already installed? And it was just the "standard" MOD72 installed with W34. Is that correct?
If my interpretation is correct, then in order to fit the articulating rear sockets to the Tie Bar you have to modify the rear wing lift pins. My logic is that because, on mine, W26A, W26B and W26C is already installed, then I don't need to re-open the wing.
I am hoping this is the case, because modification of the Main Wing Spar and addition of the Spar strap seem to be the easier sections of MOD 52.
With best regards,
Jon

Hi Jon,
My starting point was with the rear pin sockets without the vertical hole for the pip-pin, the tie-bar with the smaller diameter spar pins/bushes and the matching smaller diameter spar pins, installed (= MOD 74 but without the larger pins).
The new articulating sockets stand off of the fuselage a bit more than the old ones - so unless this has already been done, you will need to install the new sockets. Because of that you will also need to open up the wing to get at the Nyloc nuts and adjust them to a new pin length. The re-rigging/checking wing sweep etc to do that is probably the most onerous part of doing the MOD
Your inspector will know best of course (though i'm an engineer by profession, i am not an inspector).
