I think they're shooting for the fairings to be perfectly vertical
and straight ahead while in flight with the gear hanging.

A question for those who have installed the Wheel Fairings. Is the
vertical line on the rear fairing marked in 48-2 fig 4 actually vertical
in flight attitude as referenced in 48-6 fig 2? Or is the top of the
vertical line actually kicked outboard at the top of the fairing in 48-6
fig 2?

48-5 fig3 and 48-7 fig1 seem to indicated it would be kicked outboard.

Thanks,

Tim,

That is what I would expect but it is not working out that way for me.
For my vertical line to be straight it places the 1/2" hole for the leg
reference below where the legs actually contact the fairing. 3/4 to 1"
below. If I use the 1/2" reference hole the rear vertical line is kicked
outboard. Almost looks like if the weight was on the gear the vertical
line would kick in and become vertical. Other than this all the other
reference lines are ok.

It should be a matter of enlarging the gear leg hole, or moving
the brake bracket holes that hold the fairing. I know it's a
pain, but if you want them perfect and correct, you'll be adjusting
them a bit to make them vertical. I can remember making a couple
of statements when I got mine done....

*) The Wheel fairings are worse than doing the doors.
*) I REALLY don't like doing the wheel fairings
*) The wheel fairings really stink when you have to do them after you're
flying already.

My plane flew almost perfect with no rudder correction before I added
wheel fairings. I put the fairings on and they weren't aligned as
good as I wanted...they were toed out. I re-worked them to try to
correct it. Ended up still not perfect. Now the ball is something
like 1/2-3/4 out to the right when flying. Had to add a rudder
block for the time being.

So, my best advice is to look at what's going on, see if you can figure
out where to adjust, and then adjust as best you can, if you want the
plane to fly straight. Sadly, the leg fairing and gear fairings are
probably the most critical thing you have to having a straight flying
plane. On the mains, the outer hole where the axle shaft goes,
is kind of a fixed spot. That just means the innner mountings with
the 4 screws may need to be moved around a bit, and the hole enlarged
for the gear leg. To make you feel better, you can enlarge that center
hole for the gear leg quite a bit, because the fairing will cover
it all anyway.

Isn't the wheel fairing section fun? It was my least favorite
part of the build, and to this day is the one thing I wish I
had the motivation to re-do. For now, it's a rudder trim block.

If the -10 has similar aerodynamic forces to the 2 place RV's, it will be the alignment of the gear leg fairings that is more important even than the wheel fairings. Seems counterintuitive given their sizes, but the positioning of the gear leg fairings up in the prop disc airflow makes them pretty efficient flight control surfaces. You can get more effect on the centering of the ball by playing with a quarter to half inch of movement of the trailing edge of the leg fairing than an inch or more of repositioning of the wheel fairing trailing edge.

Try it. You might like it Smile.

That said, I also have a permanent wedge on the rudder of my -7A. Sad
