I am trying to hook my altitude encoder to my transponder and GPS. I have the TX and RX going to the right places but am wondering what I have to do with the grounds. Here are the connections.
Serial Port 1 TX Encoder to Serial Port 1 RX Transponder
Serial Port 1 GND Encoder to Serial Port 1 GND Transponder
Serial Port 1 TX Encoder to Serial Port 2 RX GPS
Serial Port 2 TX GPS to Serial Port 2 RX MX-20 Multifunctional Display
Serial Port 2 GND GPS to Serial Port 2 GND MX-20 Multifunctional Display
Will this work or do the different serial grounds screw things up?

i know solder connections are generally frowned on, especially in engine compartment but my take on a solder splice in the middle of a 6'' run with the wire bundled with 6 others is that it is totally satisfactory. am i wrong that solder is ok if you pick your application sites?
I was never aware that solder connections were frowned upon! In fact my belief is that a well executed solder connection, with good mechanical connection, good solder flow, and a double insulation with heat shrink, is in fact more reliable than any other connection, over the long term. Just my humble opinion!

I may be wrong, but do serial ports have a port ground? I have a GRT system and each serial port has an in and out…..but no separate ground. In this case the serial out would be one wire going to wherever you want…..to its serial in.
