John McBean,
I have been thinking about replacing the turtle deck on my Classic IV. I was thinking of the Leaxn but think it is probable heavier than the aluminum. What I would like to do is go to a one piece turtle deck with one window. Do away with the havles and make it one piece. Do you know if Skystar fabricated their own or did they send that out? Jeff

Jeff, I did just that. Mine was the original two window design, and I just cut a large opening, and pop-riveted a single panel of polycarbonate into it, with RTV to seal it from water. I drilled out the hinge rivets, and riveted a thin aluminum sheet behind (under) it, and it works great, super easy, and quick. And a $12 roll of dark window film finished it off nicely.
I had the thought of replacing the original hinge, and have a single window that folds. Not much harder, and still allows it to fit in the seat for transport.
As easy as it was, there is no way I could justify the expense of the formed Lexan turtledeck. It would have to sell for $50 to make it a cost-effective replacement for my method.

Not a bad idea. As I recall the original reason for the hinge was for the
guys trailering. After folding the wings, the turtle deck folded and fit
nicely on the seats.

My turtle deck is a one piece with a single large piece of Lexan installed.
I think the original builder fabricated it himself to try to cut down on
winter drafts. I much prefer to use it to the folding deck which I also
have. The one piece is quite a bit easier to install as the centre isn't
flopping around like a drunken sailor while I'm trying to get the camlocs
turned.

I also fond the hinged turtle deck to be a source of rainwater
infiltration. I had to tape mine. I'd rather have a one-piece one.

In the cold winter weather the previous owner of my plane also taped the
edges around my one piece deck. I haven't flown in the winter yet.
As for drunken sailors... I look out my double patio doors and see the cruel
sea..... (North Atlantic) That's the cheapest high I can imagine!! and I
wouldn't' be any place else!!

I got my one-piece t'deck from LP Aeroplastics. You make the former
t'deck a one-piece, then attach the LP version, bubble window, to it.
