Dear all,
a little reminder for the Europa meeting in Bad Dürkheim. In the meantime I've checked the following:
The weather will be good
No landing fees will be charged for Homebuilts, since the meeting will take place together with the OUV-summer-meeting (the german counterpart of the LAA) http://www.ouv.de/fly/.
No PPR is required http://www.edrf.de/.
MOGAS is available.
Camping beside the plane is possible and it is also possible to use showers etc. at the adjacent camping place http://www.knauscamp.de/bad-duerkheim for 3,50 EUR. At this camping place there's also a lake to go for a swim.
On friday evening 16th there will be a little BBQ from the OUV - all Europa pilots are welcome to join in.
On saturday evening there will be a gathering in the hangar - all Europa pilots are welcome as well.
There is a Restaurant at the airfield http://www.restaurant-cockpit.de/
There is lots to see in the City of Bad Dürkheim http://www.bad-duerkheim.de/, which is situated in a famous wine growing district and which is in walking distance from the airfield.
We'll try to get the Europas parked together.
All in all a very relaxed and uncomplicated atmosphere on a friendly airfield in a nice landscape - well worth a visit!! Also there will be some very rare birds of the OUV-members to see.
I'm looking Forward to meeting as many as possible of you there. Weather permitting I'll be at the meeting from friday late afternoon until sunday.
If you have questions or need any assistance - don't hesitate to ask
Regards
Roland

Hello,
attached you find the flyer of the OUV to the event with some additional informations like program, accommodations etc. (unfortunately only in German).
The OUV representative assured me, that all foreign Europas are welcome as well, and a couple of them have already announced their coming.
If you have any further questions, don't hesitate to ask.
I'm sure it's going to be a fun weekend
See you in EDRF next week then

Hi Roland,
I'm still planning to fly in. Hotel is booked. I may have my son with me too.
I'm intending to file a flight plan from Lydd direct to Bad Dürkheim via the following route. It's only my second international trip, so I'd appreciate any advice on the intended route from anyone reading this. The route is:
Lydd - SOVAT (at) 5000'
SOVAT - Auchy-Les-Hesdin (at) 5000'
Auchy-Les-Hesdin - VEDUS(at) 5000'
VEDUS - CONDO (at) 4000'
CONDO - OLGAD (at) 4000'
OLGAD - Grunstadt (at) 4000'
Grunstadt - Bad Dürkheim (at)4000'
What do you think? 2 Hrs 42 Mins with no wind. I'm wondering if I should actually break it and land in France somewhere, but I'd rather not.
Hopefully see you there.
All the best.
Carl

Roland,
Do you know if I will be able to clear customs at Bad Dürkheim?
Thanks

OK. I have spoken to Tim at OUV and I'll be clearing customs in Hahn. I've called Hahn operations and tower and I don't think I've ever spoken anyone more welcoming and helpful.

Good morning Carl,
great, that you are planning to come with your son!
Normally you won't need to clear customs from the UK to Germany but only border police, which should be possible in Bad Dürkheim EDRF. I'd avoid Hahn, since it's expensive.
As for the flight plan I only can say, that it is easier to cross Belgium as one might think when looking at the chart (done that two weeks ago to Le Touquet), especially on weekends. Just log in with Lille Info/Brussels Info.
Looking forward to meeting you there
Roland

Hi Carl,
You've taken a similar route to the one that I took when I ferried my Europa from the UK to EDTY.
From my reseqarch of that flight, I can offer that two cheaper options than Hahn are Zweibruecken and Mannheim City. Both customs and immigration are available PPR/On Request. But as Roland says above you'll only need immigration.
Just a thought... I don't know if you'll have life jackets on for the crossing; but in the end I decided to drop into Le Tourqet and clear all formalities there and then complete the journey. Having the life jacket on for an extended period was getting annoying.
Oh, and a tip for the return journey... if you reverse your route, you fly over Idar-Oberstein... at the airfield restaurant, THE BEST STEAKS I HAVE EVER HAD!!!! And you can order them on the radio, so the meal is ready on your arrival
I hope to be at the fly-in for the Saturday. Look forward to meeting you.
Jon

Thanks for your help Roland & Jon,
I've tried to call the airfield on +49 6322 61500 to see if I can clear immigration there, but the call rings once and then drops. I've also sent them an email, so we'll see if they get back to me.
I'll also look into the two alternatives you suggested, Jon. We'll get there somehow - weather permitting or course!
All the best.

Good morning Carl,
I've called Bad Dürkheim (the number was correct) and they told me, that they cannot clear immigration there unfortunately, so Hahn might be an option (however rather expensive AFAIK), Saarbrücken EDDR, or maybe indeed Le Touquet, as Jon suggested. A note concerning Zweibrücken, they are PPR for all flights.
Hope this helps.
Regards
Roland

OK. So having spoken to another flying buddy it looks better if I keep out of Brussels airspace and fly direct from Lydd to Zweibruecken. I just need to give them 24 hours prior notice so they can arrange the border police, and then let them know when I expect to arrive. They all seemed happy.
So, my revised route at FL050 is:
Lydd - SOVAT
SOVAT - Auchy les Hesdin
Auchy les Hesdin - RENSA
RENSA - AKELU
AKELU - E1 VRP(NW of Zweibruecken)
E1 - Zweibruecken
In nil wind we're looking at 2 hrs 20 mins. Bring it on!
All the best.

In my experience it is not generally necessary to avoid Brussels. I flew twice in the corridor between Brussels and Antwerp at FL70 and FL110 in a straight line. You are with Radar then, but it seems often to be easier than down low. Depends on the weather as well of course.

Just wanted to say thanks to Roland for arranging the Europa event at this OUV fly-in.
Great to meet those that came, good conversations and advice thrown around! And I look forward to the next one!

Thanks, Jon - I enjoyed it very much as well But it was especially the OUV, who was so kind to accept us at their summer meeting, although most of us - like myself - are no OUV-members. They live indeed the fellowship between pilots. And a great demonstration for this I found that they gave the price for the longest distance to a Europa-pilot from England

It was a great event chaps. The people and the hospitality were fantastic.
It was great to get the longest flight prize. 580nm+ either way! I shared it with David and Karen also from the UK as they'd flown almost as far.
Thanks Roland for inviting us to this event. You may not have organised it, but you were the one that brought it to our attention. I'll hopefully see you chaps at another one. If you're planning to attend any others, please post them on this forum so others can see if they can make it too.
I got a nose wheel puncture whilst taxiing to runway 03 at Zweibruken. It was a good job I had brought a spare and there were fellow pilots around with tools. It delayed the return by 90 minutes, but it all went smoothly after that.
All the best.
Carl
