Went down today. What a loving God I serve!

Wind was out of the North East, Landing on a field East. Building (hanger) blocked the air, wind went out from under me. Plane was traveling 50 at 1180 ASL, field is 1,140 ASL. Approximately 100 feet from edge of strip. Probably (?) applied power while slightly (?) pulling stick back. BOOM!

Pictures attached. First: God thank you for covering my, you know what. Second, Thank you Homer Kolb for the cage and the sissy bars. Third, Thank you Andy Humphrey, Instructor for instilling the right things to do, even if I didn't apply them all at the same time.

Total damage, not including engine which will be checked out for crank damage; prop, sissy bars, underwear (just kidding), Pitot tube!

That's right, no wing damage, no tail end damage, no nose damage (fiberglass),no tube damage, or landing gear, OR CAGE damage, thank you Homer, a little soy beans, a very small amount of pride (don't have much of that left, thank you Jesus), Chute did not deploy, thanks to the builder for putting it underneath rather than on top, and lastly, no physical damage!

Soy field usage: 40 feet total for landing! Removed wings, turned over, pulled back into hanger. Looked over for additional damage, found none. Will go over with instructor next week and check closer.

When I got out the gas tank discharged slowly all 6 gallons of fuel: mags off, power off, fuel pump off. Remove camera, cell phone, car keys, and asked myself: " wonder what it's gonna cost to get back in the air"! Not: "wonder what somebody would give me for this piece of &^%$%(at)$#".

Instructor said, "Proof, that I will fly again, and again, and again"!

Now need to find cheap new 66" x 3/4 wood prop, old one is on office wall AND on hanger wall , next to instructors old Avenger's prop!

Exceeding my ability here in Ohio, but learning more each time Ralph!

Ralph
I feel your pain! I to am a believer and am glad you are OK. Yes these
planes are not only fun to build and fly but when things go amiss I am
glad to be in a Kolb. Hope this does not take all the wind from your
sails and you get it in the air soon.

Wow! You had an adventure that few will ever have even if they pay 20
times that much, and you didn't even get skint up. And since today is
Saturday, you will be able to brag on Jesus some more tomorrow.
Good on Ya Ralph!

Went down today.!>>

Hi Ralph,

someone certainly smiled on you from the sound of things. From what you
describe you hit turbulence downwind of the hangar, or just an exaggerated
wind gradient and she stopped flying. Hard luck! Glad that you were not
hurt.
You say that you had to turn her over to retrieve the machine from the soya
bean field. During my burst of stupidity when I hit the barn the wing was
destroyed but also it was forced back. I have found since that the cotter
pin holding the front of the wing to the cage was bent so the force exerted
must have been considerable. This will entail a very careful examination of
the straightness of the cage. You may well find something similar. Hope not,
but check

Good luck

Pat

Ralph, Glad to hear you're in one piece and the Firestar, too.
If that 66 X 28 prop I offered will help you get back in the air, it's yours to use. I'm 1900 miles away, but my girl friend can have it at Fedex in the morning. Let me know if that will work and send your address.

Been there, done that, not in a Kolb. Upside down on the ground with the gas
dripping up the windscreen. Happy about the way Cessna built their 180s.
Also had microburst at Yuma take me off runway through the gravel, stayed
upright and dead calm after. Watched a twin land and he got dropped about 50
feet over the numbers and he or co-pilot reported it. When I went in to
check weather for rest of flight was told a guy almost came through their
office window facing the runway the day before, and windshear or some weird
turbulence almost took me through a complete roll at Palm Springs on
takeoff, maybe a hundred feet above Mother Earth.

My last C 180's name was Inshah'allah...God's Will. She never let me down,
though mechanics and AI's did.

Looks like the wind was still about 3 to 7 across in one of your jpgs. It
probably flowed over the hangar and then toward the ground. Friend had that
happen in high mountains and lost a fast 5K feet and came out of it about
100 feet higher than you did, just over the treetops.

Get well; get your bird well.

Hi Ralph,
Holy crap !

The fuel dripping......was it coming from the vents....?

I have some pictures of my vents being routed BELOW the tanks

Just in case it should go "belly up" the fuel won't leak....( hopefully )

Gotta Fly...

Mike, That is a great (watch his head swell now) idea. It didn't initially register but when it did, WOW! That is simple and does the job. Thanks. I have only one question, clear venting. How do you know or make sure in your walk around that the vents are clear of (here's that word) Mud Daubers, spider webs, or faunta and/or floura?

I would be most interested in doing what you did, if I can be confident that the system can breath, or I might have traded a one time problem for an everytime problem.

Thanks again Mike.

P.S. here are a few more pictures of the plane up close and personal.

Hey Ralph,
First of all , it's not "my" idea.....I heard about running the vents like that ,and thought it was a good idea....That's why I did it to my system..... ( the guy talked about being upside down with fuel dripping on him )

During my initial preflight, I need to go into that area for my squeeze bulb,
I guess I should be looking at the vents

No matter "How" you have your system , your gonna have to watch out
for something clogging it.....I guess some "fine" screen or nylon box around the ends of the lines would solve that....?

Glad to hear your wings and tail aren't damaged....

Sounds like you'll be back in the air in "no time"
Gotta Fly...
