Hi All:

"My Kitfox" new owner is currently performing a
complete restoration. He already applied sand
blasting to the fuselage, and the applied an epoxy
primer and a polyurethane coat. It is in good shape.
The wing lift struts however are a different story.
When he attempted to remove the bracket that attachs
the jury strut to the wing lift strut, he found that
the strut was heavily corroded. He said I'm lucky to
be alive. I flew this plane for the last time on
December 2004, and then it was for one and a half year
on my backyard, exposed. This rust may have developed
during that time frame. I will never know.

What really matters is that now I need a pair of Wing
Lift Struts and Jury struts for a Kitfox II. I have
some questions regarding my alternatives:
- Could I adapt Model IV wing lift struts to a model
II?
- Could I get a pair of Model II wing lift struts and
jury struts from John McBean/Kitfox LLC?
- Do any of you have a pair of Model II wing lift
struts in good shape for sale? Please not rust!!!

Thanks for your support!!!

José Toro

I took my Model IV to a weld shop and had them copied in the larger size. I
may have the lighter mod IV struts available but don't know if they fit and
I suppose shipping would be terribly high. Bob u.

Bob:

By lighter and larger, do you mean different diameter?
I've been told that the wing lift struts are different
in model II and IV. However, if the Model IV struts
can be adapted to the Model II, I'm willing to buy a
new pair.

I probably won't be able to copy my actual struts to
build new ones since one is longer than the other, and
I know for sure that both were incorrectly installed,
which means that probably both were wrong in terms of
length and angle. You won't believe how beautiful
this Kitfox used to fly with incorrectly installed
wing lift struts. Our goal now is to do it right as
part of the restoration.

regards!

Jose

The old ones I think, if my memory serves me right were 7/8" dia but were
smaller than the new ones for sure. Have NO idea if Mod IV struts fits the
MOD II. You would have to go to Kitfox for that. Bob U>

The model IV struts are longer than the model II since the bracket
location is further out on the spar.. I could get you dimensions if you
need them.

José Toro,
If you change the length of the wing struts, you will affect the angle of
the bolt holes that were drilled in the spars at the airframe mounting. Even
a little length will render the current spars unusable or worse if you bow
them to fit, the spars may fail in flight. Also you can not move the spar
connection for the lift struts with out weakening the spars. Please consider
this .....

Thanks, John Oakley
