Is you plane going to be hangered most of the time? If not the tint could put more heat on the acrylic and cause it to distort.

If you can find it you'd be better of getting tinted acrylic than adding the tint after market.

How about doubling it with a thin tinted piece of LEXAN ?

I don't know how old your kit is, but mine came with a tinted piece of lexan for the top. Works pretty well. You can get different tinted pieces of lexan from McMasters. I would not double it, it just adds more weight.

Just a thought - how about 'solar film', it's used to cut down heat in conservatories, sunrooms, etc. Very light and easily removed if you don't need it.

I think it's made by 3Ms among others.

Jean-Paul and Bob,

It seems to me the other side of this coin is the question of thickness of the required piece of plastic. The canopy thickness is determined mostly from the aerodynamic forces rather than the need to filter the sun light. You could add a very thin sheet of plastic to act as a light filter rather than designing a new canopy with the color filter included.

By adding a very thin and light filter sheet, you could get the optical behavior you want with only a very small weight addition. You could add and remove this additional filter without replacing the main canopy.

Paul, we're not talking canopy here. We're talking about a 701 roof windshield or skyshield. Different story.

I used tinted lexan, available at plastic distributors. The window tint like you use on cars will not stay on Plexiglas or lexan.

When I purchased my 801 kit in August, 2003 from Zenith, it came with a
tinted Lexan top window.

Hi Larry,

I didn't notice that your top glass was tinted. Reckon I should be more observant Smile

Best regards,
Chris

Yep, it's a pretty dark smoked grey. Notice my little side windows, the top
is out of the same piece. I bought a 4X8 piece from the distributor in
Little Rock. If I remember right is was about $90, plus it's 1/8". My
windshield and doors are also tinted. I got them from Zenith.
