I need to know what wire size to use for landing lights. I realize it depends on voltage and watts and electrical stuff like that. Would 16AWG be enough or does it need to be heavier?
Thanks,

Dave,
16 is the recommended gauge for 100W lights.

Dave,
I'm not sure what you're building. I'm building a 601 XL and there is drawing 6-S-2 "Power Distribution Bus" that has a wiring schematic. It calls for 14AWG for the landing as well as the taxi lights.

I'm building an 801. I have 16 gauge for my strobe/nav lights. The strobes
are mounted in the tips. I haven't installed any landing lights yet, but
thought I'd ask ahead of time.

Right on!
Let us know:
What the current requirement is for your light(s) If there is more than one light how many
How long the run will be from your landing light switch
Will that wire be part of a larger bundle ( doubtful )
Landing lights can draw a lot of current. They are typically on for over five minutes at a stretch. If they are too small they can easily overheat especially if you get a long final.
For systems where the battery is on the firewall and the lights are mounted in the cowl a relay between the battery and the light could be an option.
In systems where the battery is behind the seats the lights could be powered directly from the main buss.

Now, there you go asking me all those technical questions. I don't know where the battery goes yet. Haven't got that far. I might put the lights on the struts up by the wing and run the wires either through the wing or inside the strut fairing. Maybe have one on each side. I just wanted to know what size wire would be to small so that I can fish them easier when I decide where to put the lights.

Ok ... for a 100W sealed beam bulb ( the norm ) the current required to light it is under 8 amps.
Now for the fun part
For one lamp with a run of 7' - 10' 16 ga
For two lamps on the same wire 12 ga wire.
For one lamp with a run of 12' - 15' 14 ga
For two lamps on the same wire 10 ga
These calculations were gleaned from AC43 for continuous flow at 20C using tin plated MIL-W-27759 conductor
I think you can see why the length of the run is important as is the current draw of the lamps themselves.
I think I would install the 10 ga wire for a couple of reasons. 1. It won't add that much weight to your plane. and 2. It will carry just about any load you may want to put on it.
Problems arise when you put too much demand on a wire and the wire gets all hot and bothered about the extra work.
Hope this helps.

Now that's the kind of answer I like. Talk to me like I don't know nuthin' or less, which isn't far from the truth when it comes to electrical stuff. Turn the switch on, the light goes on. Turn the switch off, the light goes off.
Thanks Noel, and all the other replies.
