Wrong...this is the real issue. The encryption (little lock symbol) you
mention is the protection of the little strings or packets of data as
they run around the internet (Servers, switches, routers,
concentrators) Once this sensitive data arrives at the end user (AC
Spruce), there is NO or very little protection of it. Backup files get
lost, computer files get lost with sensitive data (credit card
numbers), laptops get stolen, or misplaced or the hard drives get
replaced and not destroyed.....Hackers can also get this data.
However, even when calling up on the phone and giving your credit card
number to the human operator, she/he types it into a computer which
brings us right back to the above exposures. It's a loss-loss scenario
for the consumer as usual.

".............. When submitting any sensitive
data on a computer, be sure the lock symbol is showing down on the
security line bar to know your data is being encrypted. I believe that

is the critical issue."

We have to be pretty numb to this as well as cautious. I would rather enter
it into a secure site than give it over the phone to some employee I don't
know. There have been many cases of employees keeping copies of these
numbers. Once when I was at Van's I saw somebody's order clipped to a
clipboard hanging on the wall in the warehouse. Yes, it had their credit
card number and expiration as well as the name on it right in plain site. I
understand this practice has changed.

How about the airline industry? They care a lot about your bags not being
out of your control before you check in. But, when you get off the plane
the go around on a conveyor belt for anybody to pick up. If you miss your
flight, they go around for a while before somebody removes it for "Secure"
storage.

We do the best we can, but we are still pretty much at risk everyday. Watch
for the lock and then just pay attention to your statements, credit report,
etc. Best I have figured out how to deal with it.

This is just another form of risk management. Everyone has their own
comfort levels on data security and you are both absolutely correct.
But I wouldn't just issue a blanket statement that there is NO
protection of data when it reaches its destination. Every company does
things differently and no one has figured out how to do it 100%
correctly. There are plenty of encryption techniques that are nearly
unbreakable but the human part of the equation is what usually breaks.

When I was in Kuala Lumpur I had my check card double swiped at a
shopping mall. By the next day I had several charges show up for
purchases in Japan. Prior to making this trip, and knowing I would be
there for several months, I opened an additional checking account that
had no access to any of my other accounts. I would transfer funds into
it when needed and knew that if anyone did get the card number they
wouldn't go far and couldn't get to my main accounts. So back to the
double swipe. The next morning I noticed the charges, while they were
still pending, because I would check for anything unusual when I was out
using it in less than perfect locations. I called my bank who promptly
marked the card as stolen, reversed the charges, and overnighted a new
check card to me from their Asia banks. Relatively painless and no real
skin off my back for the trouble. Funny thing is the bank has very
aggressive fraud algorithms that would routinely shut my card off for
going to places like Home Depot but they never caught this, I did.

So do what you are comfortable with and everyone needs to keep their
own eyes on their bank activities and credit reports because no one else
will. I would personally worry more about who all has your SS number
because identity theft is a whole lot harder to stop and reverse than
some charges on your CC.

Rather than credit card theft, as big, or bigger threat to your treasury
is use of debit cards. With credit cards, if they are stolen, your loss
is limited to the first $50, and in most instances, that's forgiven as
well. In short, the bank is on the hook, save for some hassles on your
part.

No so with a debit card. Anyone gaining control a debit card has full
access your account and clean it out...and you have no recourse. If
debit cards are used, you should open a separate bank account and keep
only limited funds in it to limit the loss if the debit card is lost.
You wouldn't want the debit card tied to your primary check account
which has lots of money in it.....though this probably does not apply to
anyone that owns an airplane!!!

I might suggest that with this level of sensitivity to the issue that
dealing in cash only with the merchant eyeball to eyeball across the counter
from you is the more comfortable option.
