You reminded me- JVL (Janesville) would be a kick-butt location too- Class D, multiple rwys, several FBOs, right next to I-90, lots of motels/restaurants etc. Think about this folks- All RVs gather at one of the nearby fields - Appleton, Janesville, Madison, maybe even Fon du Lac as their primary nesting spot and those who just gotta run up to OSH for shopping, judging, or a burning desire to see all those Ford/John Deere/Aeroshell commercials could hop up for the day, then back to campsite for some serious RV bonding. Maybe even get some of the formation groups (FFI, TeamRV, Ohio Valley etc.) to do clinics/airshows- propbably even better staging point for their forays into the big show- how cool would that be?
Think EAA would notice? Hell, they might even support something like this. Two locations to generate more ca$h!
Or not...

You know, as I look back at '06, the highlight of my year was -- again -- Oshkosh and, in particular, the RV Builders BBQ. Oshkosh isn't about Poberezny, or EAA, or corporate folks... unless you make it that. So be sure you know what it really is you're walking away from.

Hi Bob,
I guess I just don't like the "bigness" of Oshkosh now days. I
used to go to "Rockford" and then for a few years I went to Oshkosh.
Things kept me from there for about 10 years and then I went back. Its a
great show one time, after that it was just to much. I think that
fiveonepw has a very good idea. I have the Sun-N-Fun in my back yard but
it to is so much ----. So I go there for one day to see the vendors I
have not been able to get in touch with. The web has made personal
contact with a vendor almost a moot point.
The EAA used to be about home builts but has transitioned into
something else. I appreciate the help it gives to sport aviation re: the
government. I also belong to the AOPA for the same reason. The EAA
magazine is like a "club" report, lots of flash but no substance. I like
"kitplanes" for their technical articles but the EAA magazine is just
circular file material. Just MHO.

I hear what you're saying, Jim. It's just that the way I get around the
"commercialism" of Oshkosh, is to spend less time in the exhibitor hangars,
Aeroshell Square, the Beach Boys concert and the flightline and the airshow,
and more time wayyyy down in the South 40 and walking around Camp Scholler
stopping in and sitting a spell with people. For the life of me, I can't
imagine a better way to spend a week! So to the extent that I go to Oshkosh
to talk to old and new friends, it's still about homebuilding and grassroots
aviation.
I just got my copy of Sport Aviation last week and recalled talking to the
gentlemen that built that beautiful plane back in 2005. They were camping
with their plane up in the south 40, near the last row. What a treat! And
then, walking back (I meet neat people by not taking the trams and shuttle
busses), I ran into a group of Ercoupe flyers who've been campaign together
for dozens of years.
The "old days" are still there. You just have to look for them. And treasure
them!
Re: The magazine. Boy, I just can't agree. I just finished reading an
article on the proper way to crimp wires. And, like I said, the feature
article was about a project undertaken by a couple of guys like me. There's
still a lot I can learn. Of course, I'm also a big Lauren Paine fan.
Jim, y'all come on out to Camp Scholler... 12th street...between Lindbergh
and Elm, and I'll prove it to you. The EAA -- and Oshkosh -- still belongs
to us. And I'll buy the beer.
Bob
