About 'fish scales' -- I always heard this finishing technique called
"engine turning' -- as on the cowl of the SPIRIT OF ST LOUIS and some
other aircraft of that era.
Anyone else remember that far back? It was a common term when I was
learning machine-shop work --

Yah, that's the proper term, but we know what he means and it's pretty
descriptive.......prob'ly more appropriate, even.
Are you back at home now, or still in my old stomping grounds ?? Turns out
that Marty Montez, the "Native American Artist" who was on the List for a
while a couple of years back, was in Palm Springs a couple of weeks ago,
too. Nice fella. Lar. Do not Archive.

Russ, Yep that's the term I've known it as. If you want to be truly arcane, it's also known as demascening. Might come in handy if you find yourself on Jeopardy.

Well, since nobody really comments on the project....Just how I didn't know what it was called....
I've looked up engine turning...
Here's some other ways it's named...
Jeweling
Krayling
Damascene (Noun, the adjective is damascening)
Ornamental Turning
Swirling
Snailing
Mottling (esp. in England)
( I thought I saw "Scaling" somewhere...)
I'm more or less "Self taught" , my plane was the second thing I ever
tried this on....and my first ( welding stool ) was all wrong....
I noticed after I did it "right" on my plane....
I've seen there are several patterns to engine turning but my first attempt was way off...
You can see in the pictures below.... it looked ....OK
But after I saw what it was supposed to look like...I re-did it...
Gotta Fly...

Mike:
I am always envious of professional welders, not necessarily fish
scalers. Pro welders come up with all kinds of unique little gadgets
and accessories to make their building and designing efforts a little
bit nicer.
One of these days I am going to learn how do it too, but never on the
level of you pro's.
