For those interested, There is a RV 10 advertised on Ebay that includes a 600 HP corvette engine with 120 gallon tanks. Item # 180081108309. I think Van could legitimately call this one a Hot Rodder.

Hmmm, I can hear it now....
"Hello, Avemco? Yes, I'd like an insurance quote on my RV-10."
"Ok, what engine and prop are you using, and what's the hull value?"
"Well, It's a 600HP auto conversion engine with a beautiful custom
prop. I don't want to risk it all, so I'd like to fully cover the
hul...put the value at $275,000."
"We'll get back to you on that."
----
2 days later...and being an EXTREMELY lucky guy...
"Hi, it's Avemco. We may be willing to write the policy for you.
You'll need the usual 10 hours in make and model, HP signoff,
Instrument rating, you won't have coverage for the flyoff period.
Your premium will be $45,000 per year, with a 10% of hull deductible."

Maybe it’s just my eyes, but aren’t most of those skins held on with copper clecos? That’s a lot of 1/8” rivets, would that really add to the structural integrity?

I don’t know where the 80% done number comes from. From the look of it, I would go with more like 30% done. The cabin top is fit, which helps, but without the fuse or tailcone riveted…? As has been mentioned before, getting the cabin top installed puts you at about the 50% point, right (as far as hours go)?
Enjoy your “EXPERIMENTAL” project, whoever buys it.

Might be a little challenged on ground clearance with a 92” prop also…

with 600 hp they could leave it clecoed and overcome the drag just on HP alone. Why would you build along like that and not permanently rivet anything is the question I would be asking.
Dan
PS John this should win the award for the ultimate hotrod, I do not think anyone else would try and top 600hp would they?

Tim, that is nearly Dead On with what the Lancair IVP crowd was hit with
just a few years ago. Money can do strange things, maybe the new Ebay
owner will make it safely to OSH '07 for a group critique.

92 inches isn't a problem with 600HP. You just stand it on the tail, hit the starter, and you're airborne... You've got to shut it down to land anyway since idle thrust probably gives 200 knots...

A six blade, Garrett Turbine with 750+shp (is lighter than a Walter) and could easily push the definition beyond 600. There have been millions lost as well as lives in the pursuit of a Corvette into aircraft solution. The Republic SeaBee is one of the few to successfully survive and there was a great article a few months ago about the Robinson 400hp Endeavour N48VP. You can read more in Sport Aviation – January 2007. You might ask Monty Barrett about “Hollywood Horsepower” at the same time. Ever wondered the fuel flow rate to actually extract 600 hp from avgas?
Anything over 10% beyond Lycoming IO-540D4A5 spec is a hot-rod (IMHO). Vne, Beefy Engine mounts, longerons, enhanced gussets, torque factor and dead-weight all move the perfectly wonderful kit into the Hot Rodder Zone. “I will take another sip of Ken Scott’s Kool Aid please”.
If the mod isn’t safer, then it just makes the completion take longer for nothing more than personal ego. The market value IS inverse to the stock completion to VAN’s specification benchmark. The future buyers of mod aircraft will help set the mark. Insurance will deal with Hot Rodders in time. Can you tell I am longing for joining Jesse, Tim, Randy, Scott and the rest.

To answer the primer question…. with 600HP the plane won’t stay together long enough to corrode
