Wing bolt torque values

Hi there,
Attaching the wings and looking for torque settings for the bolts. AN-4 at
50-70 inch pounds (two bolts into the center web of the spar), AN5 at 100-140
inch pounds (rear spar). Now for the close tolerance bolts I am thinking to
use the approx diameter and go with those settings. For the big boys, NAS 1307-
50 (they approx 7/16) so going 450-500 inch pounds and the smaller NAS1304-50
(approx 1/4) I am going 50-70 inch pounds.

This is for an RV-8 with the new wing. Does this sound right? Does anyone
have any "better" numbers?

John,

I like that serial number.

Those are the numbers I used on my -7A and the wings haven't fallen off in
over 2 years.

Thanks for the quick reply! Going to try the dry ice and Boelube trick to get the bolts in. Yeah, when you have tail kit # 2 you are taking slow building to a new level. ha,ha But she will fly this year. OSH is the goal.

John,

I don't think the dry ice is necessary, IMHO. I just put some wheel bearing grease on the bolts -- avoiding getting any on the threads. I tapped them in with a hammer and brass punch or block of hardwood.  Have someone hold up the wing tip as you tap. You can feel when the bolt is going best and tell the person holding the wing to raise it more or less, "That's it, right there!"

I put my bolts in the freezer of my refrigerator and transferred them to the airport in a cooler to keep them cold. A bit of grease and they slid in very easily. Minimize hammering in to avoid buggering up the threads. Larry in Indiana

Dan, I found that using a rivet gun worked excellent. for getting bolts through the spar and bulkhead. The small magnitude (in force) rapid tapping made them go in much easier than any heavy force.

For the record, hammering in didn't bugger up the threads at all. You don't
hammer on the threads. The friction is along the shank of the bolt. The
threads are smaller in diameter than the shank.

I had the holes in alignment by using standard hardware store bolts first,
then replacing them one by one with the close tolerance bolts. Guess I should
have gone into more detail.
