To fly into Class C or Class B airspace you need an instructor's endorsement in your logbook. To get that you will have to learn to read a sectional so you understand altitude restrictions within the airspace. The classic definition of Class B airspace is the upside down wedding cake. The airspace only goes to the ground in the area around the airport itself. The further you get from the center the higher the floor level of controlled airspace. Approach corridors in and out will have their floor extended downward further from the core than traffic and holding areas. Most flying in the Vfr areas under the veil require only that you have a transponder and have it set to 1200. Without a transponder you have to call ahead and get permission to operate in those Vfr areas. I'm not sure you would be allowed up into controlled airspace without the transponder as each aircraft is assigned a unique code.
I learned to fly GA in the Class D airspace of Renton (RNT) which is completely inside the Seatac Class B perimeter and abutts the Class C airspace around Boeing Field (BFI). The normal pattern at RNT was to the east of the runway. When requesting access to the VFR corrider directly over Seatac you asked RNT tower for a Burien turnout. RNT would get you the transponder code and direct you to contact SEA immediately after takeoff. If the wind was from the north you were instructed to use a close in west pattern and you would be very close to the downwind for BFI. The payoff was when Seatac ATC would direct you to climb to 1500 feet and cross the runways at 90 degrees. I never got tired of looking down the approach and seeing jumbos coming right at me.

I'm not really sure you can go into "B" without a Transponder & encoding Alt.

Re: pilot endorsements and aircraft equipment
requirements for flying into Class B, C, and D
airspace:
Part 61.325 states:
"If you hold a sport pilot certificate and seek
privileges to operate a light-sport aircraft in Class
B, C, or D airspace, at an airport located in Class B,
C, or D airspace, or to, from, or at an airport having
an operational control tower, you must receive and log
ground and flight training. The authorized instructor
who provides this training must provide a logbook
endorsement that certifies you are proficient in the
following aeronautical knowledge areas and areas of
operation:
a) The use of radios, communications, navigation
system/facilities, and radar services.
b) Operations at airports with an operating control
tower to include three takeoffs and landings to a full
stop, with each landing involving a flight in the
traffic pattern, at an airport with an operating
control tower.
c) Applicable flight rules of part 91 of this chapter
for operations in Class B, C, or D airspace and
traffic control clearances."
AIM 3-2-3, b5(b) & (c) states that in order to enter
Class B airspace, the aircraft "unless otherwise
authorized by ATC...must be equiped with an operable
two-way radio capable of communicating with ATC on
appropriate frequencies for that area, and an operable
radar beacon transponder with automatic altitude
reporting equipment."
AIM 3-2-4 c2 (a) & (b) requires the same for Class C
airspace.
AIM 3-2-5 b2 requires only an operable two-way radio,
again unless otherwise authorized by ATC.

Hi Art,
Good post.
You can fly under the outside control zone of class"C" without a radio or transponder. That being said I would at least have a radio. While in the Kolb I only had a radio and I would fly under Tucson class "C" airspace outside control zone under the 4200' floor at 3800' without any issues and that put me about 1000'-1200' AGL. Sometimes I would communicate with Tucson Approach just to let them know I was there and they never gave me any hassle. They were glad I called them. We have a lot of ultrlights in the Tucson area and this is how they traverse the area.

This is another one that ther authorities here are trying to load on us.
They are proposing that Everyone, but EVERYONE, should have a transponder.
Naturally there is an outcry, thousands of letters were sent to the CAA and
the authorities are looking at it again. The ultrlight community is of couse
arguing against the cost and the weight. Don`t hold your breath. Once Big
Brother gets an idea it is hard to stop.

I have to have one if I don't want to drive 30 miles away to fly my plane
I'm right on top of class "B" airspace....But with Elec Start....You need a Transponder to Fly within the "Mode C" ring....( beyond "B" )

| Mike &
Mike:
Couldn't afford to have all that equipment on board.
Somehow I have been able to fly all over CONUS, Canada, and Alaska,
with the aid of the cheapest ICOM handheld, the A3, and a Garmin 196
GPS. Sometimes that can be too much stuff to take care of.
