Is the ignition system altitude sensitive?



I get to 13,000' and it starts running like crap.

No, but the carburetor is.  Section 73.10.03 of the M14P maintenance manual 

covers the carburetor.  Task Card 206 of this section guides you through the 

adjustment procedure for the altitude control.

Dennis,



I have the AFP throttle Body not the pressure carb.



Adjusting the mixture has no effect on the engine just rapidly losing power and running rough at around 13,000'.



Any thoughts?

Milt,

Have you talked to AFP about the problem?  Sounds like a fuel/air problem. 

Have you checked all the intake tube gland nuts and the intake tube collars 

for tightness?  What about fuel pressure?



On a lighter note - New specs for the Rocket.  Service Ceiling - 12,900'.

Ugggghhh! that thought occurred to me.



Yep tightened all connections . Need to talk to Don at AFP. My impression has been these units do not accumulate ice, but as I look back the engine was acting just like it had carb ice.



It was -8degC at 13,ooo that day and due to my induction air routing my intake air is anywhere from 20-30 degF warmer than ambient.



That would have put my intake air at the throttle body in the freezing range.

I know the M-14P carb version is susceptible to carb ice. Several years ago,

Bob Hoyt who owned the original Pitts 12 N80XP at the time, tried to fly it

from his home near Portland, OR to Sun-N-Fun. He picked up so much carb ice

trying to get across the Cascades in late March that he almost ended up

deadsticking in, and barely got it back home. I remember him telling me it

was pretty scary since he didn't have a mixture control to try to lean it

out to attempt the backfire remedy. It took quite awhile after he got to the

lower altitudes before it started running ok again.

Talked to Don at AFP.  He really can think of no reason why the throttle body would precipitate this behavior, so if it ain't spark and it ain't the throttle body I am going to assume induction ice and install some sort of induction heat mechanism.

Some overdue follow up.



I have always heard that your engine talks to you when it is having a problem and you should heed its warnings. My altitude problem was clearly talking to me and instead of listening made an assumption and headed for disaster.



3 months after my 1st post in this thread I sufferd vapor lock, engine failure at low altitude, and a forced landing, a narrative of which can be read here...

Early on in the building process George Coy strongly recommended a fuel return line, advice I unwisely ignored. George was right it probably would have prevented the accident.



Hopefully I will soon be back in the air without a 13,000 foot ceiling.
