I have an old Bendix autopilot on my 500 Shrike. It has been giving us trouble while trying to hold the heading bug or in the Nav function. Anyone have a suggestion as to who might be best qualified to troubleshoot this system. Also, if you were going to upgrade, which system would you go with and what should I expect to spend on such a system. Any help would be tremendously appreciated.
Sincerely,
Tommy Mathieu

Tommy,

You didn't say which old Bendix A/P you have -- is it an M4 series?

If so, make sure your "TURN" command knob is in the center detent. It's a very subtle detent and if it's out, it cancels HDG mode or NAV mode.

See the "TURN" knob below.

Next, check your ROLL trim. On some A/P control heads, if this is pulled out, it can cancel or interfere with HDG mode. This also has a detent, so see if you can find it and start engaging HDG or NAV mode from that point.

If either of those checks don't get you0happy, take the airplane to Autopilots Central in Tulsa, OK. That may be far away from you, but I don't know of anyone left who understands0the Bendix/Motorola M4s.

There are some trim pots than can be adjusted for ROLL or NAV track and that's best done in flight with the autopilot technician turning set screws while you keep the airplane safe.

It may be that you need a circuit board replaced. Autopilot Central should have them, or, can trouble shoot components if need be.

It may be that you need the autopilot replaced and I trust if that's so, several TCFG members will check in with their recommendations on modern systems.

Good luck!

Wing Commander Gordon

Hi Tommy,

I have an old Bendix M4 in the Aero Commander I fly and0 it was not working about a year ago. I knew a man in Ferandina Beach, FL0 who did avionics and I asked him about it. He said, "I've been working on0 the M4 since 1961 when they came out and have many parts around". So I0 sent him the controller and black box. He fixed it and it works great0 now. It's very steady and except for a few minor quirks (nothing0 bothersome) it's great. He has all the test equipment for it too.

He's not doing as much avionics work as he use to but he0 might work on it if your are not in a hurry. I've got another Bendix at0 his shop...so mine comes first,...ha! ha!

Send me your email address and I'll give you his particulars, address, phone number, etc. I don't know if he's looking for0 a lot of business these days. He's doing more corporate flying now than he0 use to.

When I purchased my 500 Shrike I had an S-tec 60-2 installed and it was a used one. It cost around 12,500 once it was said and done.

Gents:

Regarding the M1 Autopilots.

Jack Chappell (Phone 951.371.7513) should have quite a few parts for the M1
and some servo testers that he got from me a while back. I also have the
complete shop manuel with fold out diagrams ect. that I bought from Mark
Thompson a while back. I beleive that I paid $ 250.00 for it. If anyone
needs it I will sell it to you for a GREATLY reduced price.

Regards,

Moe

Avionics Inc. at LUK Cincinnati does great M-4 work. He has been working on0 them for years and does not just suggest "replace it.

In my opinion I would not replace an M-4 with any of these new autopilots0 unless I could not fix it.

I would love to have one in my 560F but I can not get the paperwork!

Hi Bill,
I still have an L2 which works a bit. What do you have in yours?
I'd like to replace it.

Hi Bill,
Just found out the Chelton AP-3c is STCd for the 560F. I'm exploring that but was wondering if you got your CIII from salvage 560F or what?
