I just completed another 1200 mile trip with the Kitfox safely tucked in it's trailer. We didn't have any issues at all, and that makes about 3500 or 3600 trouble-free miles towing it.
The point of this posting is to let everyone know that even though flying it from one place to another is a lot more fun, you can safely take your plane with you even if you can't fly it there.
It just takes a little planning, the proper set up, and the desire to have your plane with you.
The comments about properly supporting the tail and the wings are all important issues and MUST be addressed, but they are easily taken care of.

I have enjoyed flying my Kitfox IV over fabulous scenery all across the US
while enjoying the advantages of having use of my 3/4 ton Yukon XL tow vehicle
to explore those same areas by road with my wife, while having the advantage of
carrying an extensive compliment of luggage, gear, coolers etc. With over
25,000 miles over the road while in an enclosed car trailer I am unaware of any
damage to the well supported, and padded airframe. The plane remains clean and
dry. The trailer also serves as a mobile maintanence, parts and supplies
hanger. When traveling alone the trailer serves as an bare bones RV (with bed,
shower, head, air-conditioning, little Honda generator etc,). When traveling
alone, I rarely overnight at commercial camp grounds as a matter of personal
convenience and cost savings, preferring small general aviation airports where
I have been ubiquitously well received with a little bit of careful and
curteous communication in advance. Nearby Wal-Marts, rest areas and truck stops
can also serve as convenient no cost overnight stops. We winter at our home in
the Florida Keys (incredible flying scenery) and Summer at our place on the
Chesapeake Bay avoiding Florida hurricanes.

At $200, I can't buy the parts to build a trailer for less. I wondered about the feasibility of converting this trailer for towing a Kitfox.

Noel, I'll answer in this thread as it is about trailering. I tried to design ramps like yours but wanted them long to have a shallow angle to pull the plane up. I keep my Kitfox at home and trailer for each flight The ramps are too long to fold back to trap the tires. They would hit the wing support braces.
I made some wheel tie downs out of two 16 foot ratchet straps. The tail is supported by the triangular shaped plywood that is hinged to fold down out of the way of the rudder horn when loading and unloading. I can unload and be ready to preflight in 15 minutes now.
To load, I set the tail on the trailer to fold the wings, then pull the plane up the ramps with a small boat trailer winch. I weighed the tail with the wings folded. It weighs 175 pounds.

Luis,
I'd be concerned about its load capacity. Also, IMHO those little bitty wheels might prove problematic for anything but very short trips on very smooth roads.

It's been a while now since I had my plane on wheels but I used to put the
plane in the towing position and tied down, with the tail up on a support
before folding my wings. Doing it that way I could easily carry the plane
all the way back to the point where the mains touched my ramps. From that
point, like yourself I used a light boat winch.
Taking the plane off the trailer was the reverse of loading. I would spread
the wings before untying and I would also use the winch to lower the mains
to the ground on the ramps...

I have one of those trailers I use to tow my ATV on. It’s way too small for the Kitfox. It could be modified to haul the Kitfox, but the deck frame is only 4’ wide by 8’ long, and maximum load is 1000 pounds. It would take a lot of modification to widen the deck frame, lengthen the axle to accommodate the widened deck frame, lengthen the trailer reach, etc. to tow the Kitfox on it.
The small tires (12” wheels) are turning about 1 ½ times faster than the 15” tow vehicle wheel speeds making them more susceptible to failure at highway speeds.
My ATV weighs about 350 – 400 pounds and with the extra gas cans, ramps, ropes and assorted tools and gear, that trailer is pretty well loaded.

Looks like it might work, but figure another $100 for wheels/tires
(from them), shipping cost, and a jack. I didn't see the overall
width listed either. It sure sounds do-able, though. I trailered my
unfinished kit on a converted boat trailer, then added all the rails,
lights, and hold-downs necessary after I finished the plane. It WOULD
be nice to see how well this trailer is constructed before buying,
though.
Heck, I'd buy one just for trailering lawn mowers, small snowplows,
trash, etc.

Thanks to all for the helpful responses. I see that the over all length would need to be increased.
As for the width, I don't have a problem with adding supports to capture the main wheels but would the axle really need to be lengthened? Is it a question of the trailer being prone to rolling over? What's a good length for the axles?
As for the load capacity, I thought 1000 pounds would be just right? The airplane only weighs 650 lbs empty and I thought that matching the trailer capacity to the airplane weight would provide the smoothest ride...
Also, I guess I should mention that this would be for short hauls to get the airplane to and from the local airport on those occasions when the winds are not favorable for landing at the short strip at my farm.

I agree with everthing John says here. Though I think you could probably
widen the frame without changing the axle width. I've also had one of
these trailers except it was from Harbor Freight. About the only thing
right about this as a basis for a Kitfox trailer is the load rating. I'd
first try to find a good used light weight boat trailer with of similar
load rating. You will still need to modify it, but not as much.
Another thing is Nothern Tools seems to have a good trailer component
selection for modifications or building a trailer. If you could find a
suitable trailer with a bad axle or too stiff suspension you could
replace it yourself.

Consider putting the Kitfox tail up on a small trailer while the wings are
extended, then swinging the wings closed and trailering to or from the nearby
airport using the planes main gear. I do this routinely for short distances on
good roads where unacceptable traffic conditions are not an issue.

Anybody who can build a Kitfox can build a trailer. I bought a Mig welder,
gas bottle, chop saw and an angle grinder, plus all the steel, wheels, axles,
etc. to build my first trailer for less than $1000. I never welded before,
after a few evenings reading and practicing got where I can make decent
welds.
The chop saw and the angle grinder are the real secret. With a good
chop saw you can cut 2x2 structural steel tubing like butter, and the
mig welder is very easy to use (with practice).
Since then I have built two other trailers, not to mention become the neighborhood welder for bicycle repairs, etc.
Invest in the tools and materials it isn't that expensive, and you will
get a much nicer product. The bolt together Northern Kit is sold by
several other companies as well. I have built one. It is a complete
bolt together kit and would not be worth it to try to convert. It is a
very light duty trailer.

Sounds like building is the way to go then. I happen to already own a MIG welder, chop saw and angle grinder so I had thought that building would be a no-brainer. But when I saw this $200 bolt together trailer it got me wondering.
Anyone happen to know where I can get plans for a suitable trailer?

Average Kitfox is a little more than half the capacity of the trailer. The tow arm would have to be extended to tow backwards. I don’t think that trailer can be modified for forward towing... At least not without a stinger to carry the tail of the plane.

Just my opinion, but I would try to find a boat trailer and remodel it rather than the one you are looking at. I'll try to post a couple of pictures of the trailer I got when I bought my Avid B. I hauled it home (about 300 miles) and last winter when I bought my Avid MK IV, I went out to Michigan and hauled it back home (about 550 miles) on the same trailer. Worked for me. Thanks to all for the helpful responses. I see that the over all length would need to be increased.
As for the width, I don't have a problem with adding supports to capture the main wheels but would the axle really need to be lengthened? Is it a question of the trailer being prone to rolling over? What's a good length for the axles?
As for the load capacity, I thought 1000 pounds would be just right? The airplane only weighs 650 lbs empty and I thought that matching the trailer capacity to the airplane weight would provide the smoothest ride...
Also, I guess I should mention that this would be for short hauls to get the airplane to and from the local airport on those occasions when the winds are not favorable for landing at the short strip at my farm.

Two problems here... Tires are not certified for use on public roads and the main gear doesn't have shock absorbers so the plane can bounce a bit if you hit a pot hole.

A double ski-Doo trailer works well too. Just extend the tow arm.

Hi Kitfox Family..I took every one advice and ,Just finishing my

trailer.I took a boat trailer and converted it to carry all most any
tail dragger.on back wards..and all so.I can carry trike wheel aircraft
on front wards,,it can even carry all most any CESSNA single engine,,the
trailer is app 30ft.and the toung can come apart to fit in a single car
garage.all so the rear platform where the front tires sit.can be made
wider to fit all most any TW plane,by just pulling pins.and the darn
thing will fit in your 8X24ft garage.this is a protype trailer.I
thinking about mass producing these at a trailer company.to sell on the
market..the trailer even has wing racks to carry wings..what does evey
one think about it??any body interested in one??I will have it on
display at the Great Lakes Kitfox Fly In..May 11th at CQA Lake Field
Air Port ,Celina Ohio.if any one wants to take a better look..Steve
