I contacted the EAA this morning to see what they knew about the issue. The person I talked with had not heard of any decision to suspend granting AW certificates for Experimental 601XLs.
He agreed that if such were happening it would be a precedent setting move on the FAA's part and that the EAA would be quite concerned with such an action. He or someone in EAA Government relations office will make calls today to the FAA and follow up and see what they can find out. I told him I'd give him a call Tuesday morning for an update.
I will, of course, let the forum know any info I receive.

Some more information.
I spoke today with the DAR that will be doing the inspection on my plane when the time comes. He says that he has been notified by the FAA to check the cable tension on all 601XLs he inspects and to make sure there is a log entry of the tension as measured by the builder and that that the device used to measure the tension was properly calibrated.
So there is not any sort of FAA wide ban in the inspection and certification of EXP-HB 601XLs.

Gig,
Thank you for taking the initiative to call the EAA. I was thinking of doing the same thing. It seems to me that a fleet-wide ban on all 601 XL's including amateur built planes would set a precedence that would affect all home builders not just those building 601's.
On a positive note, Louis Kantor reported on zenith.aero that he just received his airworthiness certificate. For those on this list that were denied inspections, I would suggest finding another inspector or contacting the FAA to get some clarification and guidance.

I spoke again this morning with my contact at the EAA. First I want to give the EAA a big 'atta boy for jumping on the issue.
The EAA has confirmed what the DAR I spoke to yesterday said and this is not a nation wide FAA move but is limited to one FSDO office. They are in contact with that FSDO office and feel that it will be cleared up shortly.
If you are a builder in the US and not member of the EAA you need to be. They are there to help us and they do respond when called.
