I have a problem - I cannot find any safe way to clean the wind shield.
As you all know it gets very easily hair scratches.
With those scrathes it is not fun to fly against sun - I do not wanna have them any more!
Have seen nightmares "hey I am going to replace Europa´s windshield".
I have tried to rinse it with plenty of warm water and cleaning detergents but that is not enough.
I am not brave enough to wipe it clean or touch it at all.
Insects are the main problem - as Bob and Ivor well know sometimes during summer here in Scandinavia exists two or even more little insects (they claimed mosquitos).
How do you do the job?

Raimo,
I have used Plexus plastic polish. With a soft cloth it works great.

Hi! Raimo
What mosquitos? I thought they were helicopters !You said it was the Finnish Air Force, anyway they took a liking to my bad meat !!
I use “Clear View” Part No. AVL-CV-16 Http://www.avlab.com
But I bought it at Oshkosh Airventure 2002 in an aerosol can and it is still good for many years yet.
Be sure to use lots of soapy water to flush any grit / bugs away and dry off first.
Regards

Raimo,
I use the stuff recommended by LP Aero Plastics, the folks who make the windows for Europa (at least here in the U.S. anyway). Go to their web site ( http://www.lpaero.com/ ) and click on the "Products" tab. From there go to the "Accessories" section. All their recommended products are listed and available there.
I will also send a copy of their care and maintenance instructions directly to you.

Bob
Thanks for good advice.
As I have noticed by myself - it is not a problem to make it clean.
It is a problem to make it clean w/o same time making those invisible scratches.
That copy "Aircraft windshield and window care and maintenance" was exellent.
Everybody should have it and read it carefully.
Lessons to learn:
Rinse, rinse and once more rinse until all the hard particles are surely away.
Using only a finger nail to remove bugs or helicopters is a good idea.
"Any paper is bad" is good to know.
Old gotton T-shirts are good
Also must be very carefull when using canopy covers or even avoid using them at least during windy conditions.
By the way - maybe the gentlest, easiest and most effective way to clean it is to fly through heavy rain...someone may think it is not the safest way - I have noticed there may exist some surprises.
Some motorcyclists use some kind of easily changeable transparent film to protect their helmet vizors. Obviously no optical problems. How is that for windshield (just front of P1)?

Interesting you mention the "tear off's" from motor cycle visors. Nascar (american car racing series)
now use "tear off's" on their windscreens at speeds of over 200mph. This could be worth a look on
our A/C.

Craig I agree - do you know the source for "tear off´s"?
200 mph is just good!
Size around 300 x 900 mm = 12 x 36 " would do the job and that size is also for P2.
If you need tinted you can have.
I guess changing it once a year would be what we you need.
And no risk to spoil shield when cleaning.
One plus point maybe more: it will be a little more rigid when bird collision happens.
Or when you drop something onto it.

Bob
I went there and had a nice chat with Neith Good.
Unfortunately they are classified to be dangerous items so delivery costs are Huge to Europe.
Price for one can only was 175$ plus the product itself.
Try to find some good stuf here.
The maintenance instructions were great, thank you.

In the motorcycle world, I have heard of spray-on Lemon Pledge being used on Plexiglas windshields. It is not for cleaning or repairing scratches, but might provide a slick surface barrier (on an already clean windshield) to protect against them. It should also allow the bugs to come off easily, or stick less to begin with.
It is not supposed to go yellow either, like Rain-X is supposed to do to it, over time. It has the added benefit of allowing the water to slip right off. Granted, I have never used it on aircraft, but maybe someone has?
I figure aircraft Plexi is similar to motorcycle Plexi, though.

I used Pledge on my motorcycle visor for years - it works well to cover small scratches. Regular Pledge is better than the lemon variety. It seems to leave less residue.

When I was learning to fly, the Traumahawks windshields were polished with Pledge at least once a day! Didn't seem to make any difference to the view! Yet to try it on a Europa!
Cheers

We have used Pledge on our classic Europa windshields for 13 years now. Excellent cleaning poroperties and has shown no apparent deleterious effects. It is also very easy to use.
The Gliding club on our airfield has also used Pledge on canopies for years.

"pledge on Plexi"
Interesting! Yes I have heard that motorcyclists use furniture polish on
their windshields.
The methyl methacrylate product manufacturers like LP Aero (George)
say it is a bad idea. Then again, they profit from the sale of specialty
cleaners and polish.
I got quite an education on swirls and scratches at SnF last week.
A key notion, not mentioned previously is that when cleaning the plexi,
first use copious water spray, then wipe with cotton with only LINEAR
strokes.
I trust George's products for reducing swirl marks.
I also have a scratch or two for which George sent me to the MicroMesh
tent for their repair kit.
I am awaiting delivery! I'll then report back!

What Johnson´s Pledge brand name you use?
Maybe Multi Surface Cleaner?

Quite many of you have reported for Pledge.

Raimo-
From Memory, It looks like ‘natural beauty’ (spray) is the one I used on my fairing and face shield. This one has the fresh lemony scent.
However, on the advice of David G, I will probably switch over to regular Pledge the next time I buy. Possibly, David, can point to what particular pledge product he has used, and/or one of the other posters?

My slight apologies, I have just been out to look at the bottle and the product we actually use is:-
Original Mr Sheen multi surface polish. I am sure Pledge multi surface will be pretty well identical.
