Anyone installed the streamlined struts on a CH701?   Parts cost was estimated at $1,000.  Lot of money for no more than 5mph  increase in cruise.

  

 Think I will wait for 2 axis autopilot  instead.

Another way to look at it is a 3-5 percent reduction in fuel burn at the same cruise speed. Others have streamlined by wrapping the struts in 0.016. There is a thread over on the Zenith builders site about this.

Or slip on the plastic streamline struts for about $200 or less.They work  well.

I made some wing strut fairings for my 701 and they work fantastic. I gained a minimum of 5MPH cruse and upwards of 10MPH cruse improvement is not unusual. I now cruse between 90MPH to 105MPH. It’s a very different airplane now; it gains speed much faster and doesn’t lose speed nearly as fast now when you pull the throttle. I was so impressed with the performance improvement I decided to market a Wing Strut fairing kit to help pay for my airplane habit. It includes all four fairings and all the hardware needed for the installation for $275. I’ve spent a lot of money on airplanes over the years and this is the best performance improvement for the least amount of money I have ever enjoyed.



Whether you by my kit or some other aero wing strut solution, just do it, you will not be disappointment.

Do you have more of a description and/or some photos?



Metal or plastic?

How does it fasten to the steel struts?

How does it install around the aux struts?

Is it easy to retrofit or is it best to install it as you build the plane?

Hi Craig,



Thank you for your inquire about my Wing Strut Fairing Kit. I’ve attached a few pictures of them for your review. To describe the fairings, they are 6061-T6, .016 aluminum cut to size and bent to wrap around the standard, round, 701 strut. They come pre-drilled and ready to install. They are attached to the round factory strut using 3/32 rivets at each end and by the 3/16 bolt attaching the Jury Struts to the Wing Strut. I also provide photo installation instructions and all the rivet hardware to make the installation. BTW: if you have the money (US$900 as I recall) and want something that

should just drop in then Mark Townsend had this to say last August:



"I have a replacement Streamline strut kit for the 701. I use my custom

extruded strut that I have for my floats and have had CNC fittings on all

ends. This replaces the 4130 tube that you now have. This is not a cheap

alternative, the .016 wrap will provide the cruise increase. I have wrapped

many 701's struts and will continue to do so in the future, but this

streamline strut kit offers a significant quality change to the wrapping of

your struts.

If this streamlined strut kit is the one made in Canada and announced about

a year ago, they were very heavy. The .025 teardrop 6061-t6 sheet covers

that you can make yourself added 8-lbs to the plane. I think these struts

were 4 0r 5 times this weight. Am I correct?

I don't know the weight. What I quoted from Mark is all I have. But at that

price your wallet will be lighten enough to compensate for the extra weight

of the extrusions.

Don't forget figure in the steel strut weight, when figuring the weight difference, between the faired steel struts and the all aluminum extruded ones.

I think Marks extruded Aero Strut solution is a first class solution. I have no idea how much they weigh but I have a feeling they are heavier than the round steel strut with the .016 aluminum fairing solution. I have not weighed the complete package yet, but I know that all four strut fairings including hardware weigh less than 4.6lbs. 



As soon as I can pull a strut with fairing off my airplane I will do that and weigh it. I’ll post the information as soon as I can get it done. My plane is not here right now so it will take until next week.

All.



I have Mark's struts and they are about 20 lbs heaver than the round tubes 

with fairings on them.  They are much more ridged than the round tube, not 

that I think the 701 needs it.  They certainly look nice and finished and no 

question as to the angle of incidence when you mount them, it is built in to 

the machined end pieces.



Although there may be some misalignment with the ends ( just like the 

factory single piece struts), they fit good, On mine I machined out the 

slots a little bigger to make up for the misalignment.



I have never flown with the round tube struts so I can't say how much of a 

difference there is between the two.  At gross weight I cruse at 5300 rpm at 

about 85 mph.  I have the Rotax 912 uls and the prop is a Woodcomp with 14 

degrees of pitch, wot at level flight is 5800 rpm and 100 mph.  I could 

increase the pitch a couple of degrees and get some more speed, but that 

isn't why I built this plane.  Climb out is at 5500 rpm, I could decrease 

the pitch and make climb out at 5800 and get better climb but the current 

pitch seems fine to fly off my 40, then we will see.
