I'm nearing completion of my flight training and I still need to do a night cross country. Only problem is that my model 4 does not have landing lights. I've read that some people are installing landing lights in the cowling. Anyone have details or picture? Is there an easier way to do this?

On my fox, the rotax only has 18amps for the charging system. I do have the wing tip set up for a landing light, but took it out because it took too much amps. The landing light could put you over. I never worry about the light. In fact when I went through training, the light never worked on the 172 I flew, so I got along without it. Now days I land all the time without it and do just fine. You sure learn to atripulate the runway between the runway lights.

Hmm. Didn't occur to me that the stock Rotax setup wouldn't have enough juice. Does it hurt the alternator if you go a little over budget on the amps or will it just draw from the battery?

A friend of mine ran the battery on a C-182 dead in
flight by having all the lights, bells and whistles on
in the touch and go pattern. He had to land by light
signals and run up the battery again before the radio
would work for taxi back.
You will probably be running off the battery for
descent and landing with the light on, but turning it
off after takeoff will allow a recharge, if you keep
the average amps + , or you'll need a backup battery
or hand held radio.
Running the battery down is not a good thing to do
with electronic ignition.

I have found that I can land better at night by turning the landing light off. It may be use full for taxi operations. I used an automotive light assembly because it was smaller and required less power to operate. As a result it is does not have the output or deflection angle of a true aircraft landing light. This is the compromise that I felt was necessary when building. Even with its reduced power requirements it still exceeds what my Rotax 912 can handle.

Very nice Clint. I've always wondered about landing lights that are
connected directly to the engine. Do you have any problems with light bulbs
burning out due vibration? Do you have a part number for it?

The very small driving light from J.C. Whitney has two screws on each side.
It is safety wired and double insulated from the oil cooler. It uses one
quartz halagan 57w bulb. I was worried about vibration and breaking the
filament but been on there for over 500 hours. Clint
